Childhood Education International is an American nonprofit educational organization and global membership association dedicated to advancing quality education and well-being for children and youth from infancy through adulthood. Founded in 1892 as the International Kindergarten Union, the organization emerged from efforts to strengthen professional preparation for early childhood educators and to improve conditions for children, particularly in immigrant and underserved communities. In 1931, it merged with the National Council of Primary Education to form the Association for Childhood Education, later adopting an international focus and becoming the Association for Childhood Education International in 1946. Recognized as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 1959, the organization has long engaged in advocacy, research, publications, and international cooperation, including humanitarian support during both World Wars and initiatives addressing poverty, discrimination, and access to education. In the mid-20th century, it played a role in early childhood policy and professional development efforts in the United States, including collaboration with Project Head Start. The organization officially changed its name to Childhood Education International in 2019. Based in Washington, D.C., it maintains members and branches worldwide and operates programs focused on global citizenship, education diplomacy, innovation, and children’s rights, while publishing respected professional journals that contribute to research and practice in childhood education.
