What was the purpose and origin of the Feasts Of Jehovah? Do they have a spiritual meaning? Do they have any application for us? These questions are answered in the chapters of this book, as we are taken through the significant dates in the calendar of the nation of Israel. We are shown the origin of each of the seven feasts, their spiritual lessons, and what will be their prophetic fulfillment. God's great plans and His eternal purpose are here foreshadowed, all centered on the person and work of His beloved Son, Christ Jesus our Lord. By His grace, we have been included in these. As we follow the details of these ancient feasts, our minds will be stirred to understand, and our hearts to worship.
I enjoyed this little book, its quite nice reading something that is written to Inspire thought more than to Implant thought. It is more of an overview than a deep analysis of each feast, thus leaves you wanting to continue the study yourself. This I thought this to be a helpful structure of double alliteration, it is not found in the book but has come as a result of reading it. The feasts can be divided up into two wide categories where the first 4 have been fulfilled and the last 3 still remain unfulfilled:
1) The Passover - The PRICE that was paid in the SACRIFICE/SUFFERING of our Lord 2) Feast of Unleavened Bread - PURITY and SEPERATION/SANCTITY expected of those who are saved 3)Feast of First-Fruits - The POWER/POTENTIAL in the SUPPLANTED life, found in the resurrection of Christ 4)Feast of Weeks/ Pentecost - The PROVISION or SUPPLY in the harvest fulfilled Holy Spirit
5)Feast of Trumpets - The PREPERATION and SECURING or regathering of the people of Israel 6)Day of Atonement - The PENITENCE or SORROW of them 'who look on Him whom they had pierced' 7)The Feast of Tabernacles/Booths - The PROSPECT of the SOVEREIGH on His millennial throne, and the millennial reign of the saints
I also just recently realised that John Ritchie was born in Old Meldrum and went to Inverurie.
This little book is a gem. It is essentially a dispensational look at the types of Christ in the feasts of Jehovah in Leviticus 23. These are the set feasts commanded by Yahweh, a holy convocation of His people Israel to share His joy with His people. They were to observe them every year once they arrived in the promised land. It was a time of fellowship. But it was also a foreshadowing of things to come.
Passover: I Cor. 5:7-8 "For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us keep the Festival." The Passover lamb was a type of Christ's death on the cross. It tells the story of redemption. It was the first feast of the new year.
Feast of Unleavened Bread: I Cor. 5:8 "Let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth." This feast speaks of our communion with God based upon redemption, in holiness and truth. Israel was to get rid of every drop of leaven in the house; we need to get rid of malice and wickedness. Put off the old man and sin so you can have communion with God. Don't be neglectful of self-judgment. Sin must be judged and put away in the saint and in the assembly. We instead need to put on sincerity and truth.
Feast of First Fruits: 1 Cor. 15:20, 23 "But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are fallen asleep... But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at His coming those who belong to Christ." This is the offering of a sheaf reaped from the field, the first sheaf presented to the priest to be waved before the Lord. This offering was offered on a Sunday. The feast signifies Christ's resurrection very early in the morning. Christ the first fruits...the first-born among many brethren. (Col 1:18, Rom. 8:29) The Saints will be resurrected.
Feast of Weeks: Feast of Weeks was celebrated 50 days after the Feast of First Fruits. Pentecost was 50 days after the resurrection. This feast is typed on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came down to indwell believers. In this feast 2 loaves of Bread with leaven were waved together before the Lord along with the burnt offering, sin offering, and peace offering. The 2 loaves point to the fact that God is gathering out from the Jew and the Gentile, a people for Himself. The middle wall of partition was broken down between Jew and Gentile. That the bread was made with leaven is significant. This is also called a "first fruit." The Holy Spirit is the earnest, the pledge of our resurrection. Eph. 1:14. 2 Cor. 5:5
Interval: Rom. 11:25 "A partial hardening has come upon Israel until the fulness of the Gentiles has come in." Acts 15:14 "God did visit the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name." In the 4th, 5th, 6th month of the year there were no feasts or festivals. A study of Romans 11 really helps with understanding this break of time. During this time our purpose is evangelism. Proclaiming the Gospel and discipling all nations. Christ is building His church.
Feast of Trumpets: 1 Thess. 4:16 "The Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trump of God." 1 Cor. 15:52 "We shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable." On the first day of the 7th month, Israel was to blow the trumpets and observe a day of solemn rest and present a food offering to the Lord. In the New Testament this signifies the day the saints will be resurrected. All gathered in resurrection beauty to their home above. The trumpets also sound, the last trump, when Jesus comes for the dead to be raised.
Day of Atonement: Leviticus 16 explains the Day of Atonement with its sacrifices. This is the one day of the year that Aaron went into the Holy of Holies to make atonement for himself (bull) and for the people of Israel for forgiveness of sins. 2 goats were selected, one sacrificed for the peoples' sins, the other to be used as a scapegoat. The scapegoat was sent into the wilderness in a picture of their sins being sent away. The carcasses of the sacrifices were burned outside the camp.
Ritchie puts forth that this feast coincides with the Judgment Seat of Christ. The saints will be in heaven and the character of our service will be under review. Our failure and imperfections of our service will be seen and the master's estimate of our work will be known. There will be no condemnation. The good is rewarded; the bad burned up. 2 Cor. 5:10. For Israel: They will be delivered from the antichrist and his allies by the sudden appearance of the LORD on Mt. Olivet. Israel will look upon Him whom they have pierced and believe. The Lord will reveal himself to them as their kinsman and redeemer. Zach. 12: 7-13:1. On that day will be Israel's cleansing.
Feast of Tabernacles: Israel was supposed to live in booths or tabernacles to remember living in tents in the wilderness. It was after the harvest and a time of rejoicing. Richie puts forth the idea that this type signifies the Millennial reign of Christ on the Earth. Zach. 14:16 "And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles."
