I am not extremely familiar with Lang's work beyond Metropolis, M, and the Mabuse films, but still very much enjoyed this exploration of how Lang understands and portrays the inner darkness of the characters in his films. Through fast, easy to read chapters Armour does a phenomenal job walking us through the distinctive elements of Lang's films and aesthetics, though with an occasional tendency to linger on plot description. This definitely does not diminish the enjoyment of reading the book, but does mean that sometimes the analysis gets buried or treated in a perfunctory way that diminishes its significance. The book as a whole is still an engaging read, and a nice introduction to the work of a filmmaker who I would like to learn more about, and whose impact is certainly unprecedented in the field of cinema as a whole.
