A solid book written at a time when it was still reasonable to be optimistic; it does the job it sets out to do well and fairly - taking into account multiple Marxist and nationalist positions, and fairly assessing the criticisms from those fronts. The author addresses when these critiques are realistic, or whether it's "too soon to tell" how things may fall. History has now answered some of the questions, but the lens of hindsight can sometimes be distorting.

Solid though it may be, this isn't a page-turner. There are a lot of statistics, possibly valuable to a specialist, but that make this short book a bit of a slog. My rating reflects that.
