Reading Level: LG
Book Level: 3.8

Summary: This book is about the Iditarod sled dog race, as well as what it would be like to go through the Alaskan Wilderness over the historic race trail. Alaska native Maggie and her Floridian cousin Alex follow the race as Maggie's sister Laura participates in the race.

Bookshelf Mentor Writing Trait(s):
Presentation: the way in which this book is put together is similar to an informational book, which it is in a sense, as it discusses the many different aspects of the Iditarod race, as there are segments dedicated to specific facts. The illustrations are colorful and fun, and the story is informative and creative.

Other Suggestions:
This is an excellent text for introducing the historic Iditarod race, as well as a discussion of the forty-ninth state of the US, Alaska.

I chose this book for Rowynn because of her interest in dogs and series books. Since the Iditarod is a dog race, I thought she may enjoy it. This book is also part of a Scholastic book series titled If You Were A Kid... where the authors have blended fiction with nonfiction as they take the reader through American History. This book was one of the recommended books on Alaska's Battle of the Books Award for 2019-2020 according to titlewave.com.
