For the second year running, a Christmas Wonderland is taking place in the extensive and beautiful grounds of Pentrillick House in Cornwall, where a small fair, a fortune teller, and a lakeside cafe run by a French patissier are amongst the many attractions. A week after its opening, Hetty and Lottie arrive in the village to take up residence in Primrose Cottage. The young-at-heart twin sisters have much to look forward to: carol singing, festive baking, and the knees-up in the Crown and Anchor on New Year's Eve. With decorations up everywhere, it seems that everything in the village is ready for the jollifications to begin. But then, just fifteen days before Christmas, someone is found dead in the grounds of Pentrillick House, and the locals and Wonderland's visiting tradespeople are faced with the possibility of there being a murderer in their midst. 'A Pasty in a Pear Tree' is the second in the light-hearted Pentrillick Mystery series located on the south coast of Cornwall.
For me the sisters involvement wasn't really enough in this book.
A good read but not a patch on the first book. Probably because the sister's sleuthing wasn't really there. Their involvement was by the way rather than up front and centre. A good plot and skillfully executed but I missed the actual sleuthing in the first book. A similiar feel to the Miss Marple setting but not the involvement. Hope the next book has the sisters back in the front of the sleuthing pack.
Couldn't resist book two. Another gentle journey for the twins, recently moved to Cornwall following their summer initiation. Both new and old characters mingled in the pub and at the Xmas fair. Free of both bad language and gore, this tale ambled along in a very cosy manner. I find the author's writing style clumsy and uncomfortable at times. Hence the four 🌟. It seems churlish to mark it lower when the book has entertained me.
Daphne Neville is a excellent story teller , i wonder why it’s taken me so long to discover her. From the first book as I finish one I buy the next. They are stories of ordinary people who do remarkable things. I can only recommend her.
