As a parent of a biracial child I am always keen to see books with diverse protagonists. Guts did not disappoint in that regard. The main character is a school aged boy with brown skin and curly hair and is relatable to a variety of ethnicities. After a conversation with his mom about doing what is right he follows his own intuition (or listens to his “guts”) when his friends are doing something they shouldn’t. I love that the author chose to use rhyming as it is something that appeals greatly to my emerging reader. Also, significant was that when the main character made a stand and decided not to go along with his friends, his friends were unkind saying “don’t be lame”. It is most certainly an important part of the conversation with our children to caution them about the feedback and pressure they will likely get when choosing to follow their own intuition. A few points that were difficult for us were the teacher yelling and the image of a very angry teacher and the use of the term bad to refer to the boys who were in trouble. To my young (and admittedly slightly sheltered) child that was all a bit confusing and upsetting because we repeatedly discuss people making bad choices rather than “being bad”. Overall, I love the messaging about trusting one’s self and the book was a wonderful catalyst to discuss doing things for the right reasons whether or not it makes others angry. So glad to see a range of diverse characters and look forward to discovering more people that look like our family. #readyourworld
An excellent story to teach kids how to determine what is right or wrong. When the story begins, the young boy took what his mother told him about “listening to your guts” literally. Later, he encounters something that he should not do, his guts spoke to him. He trusted this instinct and did not join in with the other kids. This is a brilliant story for young readers.
This is a sweet, charming children's book with a really important message teaching kids to listen to their guts. It's a nice addition to any kid's library!
