This text is a self-contained, student-centered methods text that connects reading theory to practical classroom activities. The paperback edition, ideal for introductory courses on the teaching of second language reading, connects reading theory to practical classroom activities. Teachers begin by exploring their beliefs and assumptions about reading and analyzing their own reading strategies. This leads to a critical examination of the pedagogical issues central to the reading classroom, including selecting appropriate activities and effective lesson planning.
In looking for a textbook for my upper division undergraduate course on teaching second language reading, I was surprised to find so few appropriate options. Most books are either too simplistic or too difficult (graduate level). So it looks like I will be assigning a textbook that is older than my students next semester just because no one has written a better book in the last two and a half decades.
This book is a solid overview of the teaching of reading, including assessment and lesson planning. The technology is obviously way out of date, but that is usually the case even with newer books.
Great for teachers trying to teach ”reading” and reading comprehension!
The edition I have is the 5th printing from 2001, which means it is a bit outdated, however the theory is still very good to use - maybe not the excerpts thought.
