A childless couple wishes to adopt their young calf named Peter, so they send him off to the village clerk in the hopes that the little bull can be taught to speak. The clerk, of course, turns out to be a con man, and continually bilks the couple out of hundreds of dollars for Peter's "education." This turns out to be a rather disturbing story based on an old Danish folk tale.

Let's just say veal is on the menu . . .

And, the con man never gets his comeuppance, though the old couple gets what they want in the end.

Sort of.
