David Scott was described as "one of Australia's giants of social welfare and policy." He was a member of the gun crew on the destroyer HMAS Arunta during World War II and was involved in numerous Pacific campaigns.

David Scott has spent a good part of his life committed to the cause of East Timor. He first went to East Timor in November 1975 just a few days before the Indonesian invasion and was forced to leave on the last flight out of Dili. David Scott wrote this book over a number of years using primary resources, particularly his extensive correspondence with key participants such as José Ramos Horta when East Timor was under occupation and cut off from the rest of the world. His book is a mixture of memoir, historical research and political analysis providing us with new information and fresh insights. David Scott has spent his life dedicated to community service. He was Executive Director of the Brotherhood of St Laurence, Chairman of Community Aid Abroad, President of the Australian Council for Overseas Aid, Vice President, Commonwealth Social Security Advisory Council; Member, Council of RMIT, Executive Chairman of the Victorian Land Conservation Council, Commissioner of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. In 1975, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia; resigned in 1976 and was readmitted in 1992. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Swinburne Institute of Social Research. David is the author of Dont Mourn for Me: Organise. The Social and Political uses of Voluntary Organisations (Allen & Unwin, 1981). In the Second World War David served on the destroyer HMAS Arunta, joining it a short time after Arunta evacuated the 2/4th Independent Company from East Timor. David Scotts book is dedicated to the courageous people of East Timor and their supporters ordinary Australians and non-government and community groups who persisted when all seemed lost.
