‘The cost of healthcare in America will continue to increase. It’s a certainty, It’s capitalism’
California author Josh Luke, PhD, a faculty member at the University of Southern California, is America’s healthcare affordability authority. After opening his career as a sports marketer, a family encounter with the health care delivery system changed his direction to enter the health care arena: he became a hospital CEO and a healthcare strategist. In addition to being a motivational speaker, acclaimed internationally for his educational, motivational and often humorous presentations he has a rich teaching history in public policy and Healthcare Administration at numerous universities, most recently designing healthcare course work for the University of Southern California's Sol Price School of Public Policy. He also dedicates time each year to being active in health care advocacy in our government.
Having read EX-ACUTE, his first book outlining the flaws in American healthcare, Josh turns to a solid book of advice on controlling costs of healthcare for businesses. His goal: to challenge us with better ways to deliver high quality, cost effective care for all people. Using his own experiences with the healthcare delivery in this country Josh outlines nine steps to achieve financial recovery in a system where healthcare is inordinately and progressively expense. His steps include offering alternative insurance models, reduce absenteeism, convert to direct primary care, conduct an independent carrier and broker expense review, implement disease specific value and care management programs, reward long-term employees with full genome sequencing and DNA testing, utilize data, artificial intelligence and machine learning, promote telehealth and emote monitoring services and educate and celebrate integrative medicine.
His advice to employers is sound: ‘You were hired as a financial steward for your company. You have the power and influence to pioneer this momentous turnabout for your company. This book represents your opportunity to pivot in the best interest of you reorganization – Health-Wealth is your road map.’
Though Josh’s writing is often glib and acerbic, he is definitely placing before us a positive manner in which to decrease health care costs and improve healthcare delivery. This is a book about today in American medicine and the changes that plead to be made.
When starting a business if you don’t think about the costs involved with running the kind of operation that you are starting you’re doomed to fail. But one of the costs that businesses often overlook (at least I did) is the medical expenses of your employees.
My dream is to start a circus school and space for people to be able to create and share their artistic skills with one another. In order to do this, I will have to provide medical coverage for my employees, especially as this is a notoriously high-risk business. But with prices getting higher and higher over years, and with no signs of stopping, this could end up being one of the most expensive aspects of my business.
This is where the book comes in. There are different tactics and strategies that can be utilized to minimize these costs and the book covers them in an easy to understand way that makes it simple to actually apply these techniques to your businesses.
Written by a professional who’s worked in the system his entire life you know what you’re reading is factual and up to date.
For anyone running a business with high medical costs, this book will pay itself back a thousand times over if you simply implement the techniques that are shared within.
Health Wealth In this book, Dr. Josh Luke looks at one of the critical issues affecting some businesses today as the workforce grows. Dr. Josh uses a series of personal experience to look at a seemingly critical issue. While personal opinions are not the best tool for judging issues related to businesses in totality, he, however, had his way of bringing out his points. Dr. Josh certainly shows that he is one with an understanding of the healthcare sector and how it affects businesses. I am not a business owner yet but with plans to own a business someday. I find this book very useful and worth spending a few cash and time on. Health Wealth sets the pace on pre-emptive measure to deal with the healthcare predicament. In this book, Dr. Josh covered very important measures that a business owner should consider to cut down on medical expenditures. Dr. Josh managed to put his points true so well and as such deserves a compliment for this work. However, business owners still need some more in-depth reading and understanding when it comes to cutting down costs and saving the company from the financial crisis. This book is worth a second read.
Health-Wealth: 9 Steps to Financial Recovery by Dr Josh Luke provides the reader with a knowledgeable insight in providing health care to US employees.
Being from the UK I found it interesting to read about how business owners in the US provides healthcare, over here in the UK some companies offer private healthcare but most of us have the NHS as we luckily don't have to worry about healthcare. Dr Luke a former hospital CEO, industry disruptor and award winning healthcare futurist explains understanding how the business owners company's can provide personalised and specialist healthcare to their employees but at the same time at a cost that doesn't bankrupt the company in the process. It's extremely interesting the 9 steps that Dr Luke explains to the reader, 9 key simple ways to transform your company . He also explains the vulnerable parts of the health system and how to use them to the business owners advantage.
All in all a very interesting read. To all US business owners I really think it's a must!
The author decided to tackle a somewhat specific topic, healthcare cost in businesses. Apparently, he knows very much about it, has his credentials and all of that is very good and fine. The thing I was looking for is realistic and balanced advice that a business owner can use to his advantage and I think there is a lot of that in this book. It is not a guide that is packed from start to finish with graphs, pie charts, analysis and numbers, it is more, I don't know, human than that. Some of the advice are purely based on author's previous experience, or at least seems like that from the way he wrote it. It is easy to read and you won't get stuck anywhere, that is always excellent it this type of niche topics. I saw in other reviews that some readers have a problem with the style of writing and presenting information and I can see that it is not for everyone, but I didn't have a problem with that. It is best to try it for yourself, if you have a need or interest in health-care topics this book offers some really good insight and ideas on how to manage it in your business.
Firstly, it is very useful to read to people who have their own business, since the health of employees is an important aspect in work and taking care of them should come first. I liked reading “Health - Wealth: 9 Steps To Financial Recovery” because there are clear examples and facts. The main goal of the book is to tell about all aspects of health care and how enterprises take it in order not to work at a loss for themselves. I found a lot of interesting and useful information. I believe that every company must find a balance in order to care for the workers and it will generate income. I also liked the structure of the book, all the chapters are named as steps, and there are 9 steps. It was easy for me to perceive the information, because the author used an easy language. I recommend to everyone, it must read.
Written for those running a business, author Dr. John Luke explains more behind one of the biggest headaches many find themselves dealing with – healthcare. Dr. Luke explains ways that one can reduce spending for healthcare by telling more about his experience with the field. He provides step-by-step details as to how you can take control of this issue while ensuring you save money in the end. Dr. Luke also uses real-life examples to show how it’s possible to overcome the issues that are often evident in this area. This book is broken up into different parts which help to make understanding the important concepts presented a bit easier. The book runs at 236 pages so it’s a little bit of a long read. However, if you’re a business owner or manager, this a book you’ll definitely want to check out. It will provide you with great information you can use to ensure your success.
The Foreword sets up his credentials with ease and set me up for something academic and maybe a bit dry. Dr. Luke managed to subvert this, however.
Instead of going for the easy of option making the book simply academic there is a clear stylistic and character driven flair that carries the information. This keeps the book informative and interesting.
So, while it is academic, authoritative, and specific to a topic of finances and healthcare, Dr. Luke manages to keep the book interesting by injecting a part of himself into it. Whilst sometimes this can feel self-indulgent, this can be forgiven because it drives the well laid out structure of the book, finding the balance between teaching and showing.
In short, it never feels preachy but always has authority.
I’ve read other works by Dr. Josh Luke and I’m always surprised by the quality of the analysis he provides, giving a clear picture of the ties that link healthcare and finances. Using a clear and straightforward speech, the author is able to introduce several importante concepts that are mandatory to keep your profitability without jeopardizing the health care for your employees. For every one in a manager position, this book should be included as a unique research tool to mach your needs to the expectations your employees have. It is a hard balance to achieve and the book offers some enlightenment on diferente tactics we may use in companies in order to avoid the skyrocketing costs of healthcare. Being something so important, for the staff and for the profitability of the company, this book covers a whole range of topics that are meaningful.
Helpful book for guidance! The book is focused on the rising health care cost, burden on employers and the impact on employees. It tries to suggest a some tips to balance between the issue of rising health care cost for employers and providing better employee benefits. The author has shared his opinion and experiences for any business that is looking for a possible solution in the form of nine steps. This is a good read to get some ideas and find ways that fits in a particular business.
Dr Josh Luke has a wealth of experience when it comes to managing and finance, even if he is slightly cocky about it every now and then. As almost all of my clients are from the states, I try to read books here and there regarding healthcare and financials. Being as I am not from the states, I did find it easy to read which is usually a mission in itself.
Health - Wealth: 9 Steps To Financial Recovery is the second book I've read on healthcare written by Dr. Josh Luke. It cannot be said that the man doesn't know what he's talking about, he definitely does. He presents the facts bluntly, something that is unquestionably necessary when talking about health and wealth. I know this is written for an audience of business owners and managers but certainly the subject matter is relevant to all Americans and I would encourage everyone to get informed.
This is purely a personal opinion and really has no bearing on the validity of the information Dr. Josh Luke provides in his books but I think I would quickly tire of conversations with him because they would be all about him. Yes, he's a successful man, there's no doubt about that and there are instances throughout the book where he shows himself humble but humility is not this man's strong suit. Some readers might be turned off by the brag rich tone of this author.
