"Vital new information for men diagnosed with prostate cancer!"
--George Johnson, Director of the Informed Prostate Cancer Support Group in San Diego, the largest independent group in California
If you or someone you know is one of the thousands of men diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, this book is must reading. In Prostate Cancer Breakthroughs, best-selling author Dr. Jay Cohen provides new information on PSA testing, targeted biopsy, and groundbreaking prostate cancer treatments.
Concise and easy to understand, Prostate Cancer Breakthroughs focuses on the information that all patients need to know. It first offers a step-by-step look at the entire diagnostic process, up to and including the diagnosis, and suggests how you should go about getting a second and even a third opinion. It then describes twelve different treatment choices that may be considered. Other important topics include genetic testing, Carbon-11 Acetate PET/CT scans for earlier identification of metastases, medication therapy, and more. Studies have proven that most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not need surgery or radiation treatment. Prostate Cancer Breakthroughs tells you how to determine what your options are. In the words of one reviewer, "This book answers all of your questions and others you didn't know to ask."
In this book, you will discover: * Why 85% of men who get surgery or radiation for prostate cancer do not need it. * Why a high PSA test does not necessarily mean cancer. * How to tell if you really need a biopsy (many men don't). * Why a targeted biopsy is superior to a standard biopsy, and where to get one. * Why dynamic contrast-enhanced imaging (DCE-MRI) is key to deciding on treatment. * Which genetic tests are available for accurate diagnosis and more effective therapy. * If medication, rather than surgery/radiation, is a valid choice for you.
Today, many doctors and patients are still not aware of the breakthrough methods of diagnosis and treatment that are being used at top United States cancer centers. Prostate Cancer Breakthroughs provides the up-to-date information you need to make the choices that are right for you.
Terrific! This book is written by a physician who has intermediate stage prostate cancer. It has a 2018 copyright date and my pretty exhaustive research on the subject confirms that it is up to the minute regarding advances. What I found helpful is that it gives information on not only treatments, but also the many tests available now to guide a man's decisions. It was very worthwhile for me as It confirms that my husband's decision to have his prostate removed is the right decision for him, but more importantly, I found out about the carbon 11 PET/CT scan test that can be done later to more accurately pinpoint areas of recurrence should his PSA start to rise. He had CT and bone scans, but has a lot of arthritis and this test is better at distinguishing CA than other scans. The book is immensity readable, a quick read actually, and invaluable.
It can really help with the many decisions to be made. Essential if you or a loved one has or may have prostate cancer.
I thought this book was well written for lay person and it was very informative. I couldn't put it down. I feel ready to understand, moving forward, and armed with enough knowledge to ask the right questions. I highly recommend it to anyone beginning on a prostate cancer journey.
I wish I had read this book before having had a second "blind biopsy." Dr. Cohen has packed this book with up to date information which has added to my knowledge of how to proceed in managing this condition that I was recently diagnosed with. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, this is a must read. Many men, including myself, immediately panic when they hear the word "cancer" associated with their prostate. If you have been recently diagnosed & you are in a "low-risk" category, do yourself a favor & read Dr. Cohen's book before you decide how you are going to proceed with treatment.
Excellent review of the current state of prostate cancer treatment. Straightforward and engaging. As Jay Cohen explains, a majority of men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer go on to have medically unnecessary and harmful procedures done. This book explains alternate approaches, both in diagnosis and treatment. As a man who's entering the prime prostate cancer demographic, I'm very glad to have this resource available.
I read this after my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer, upon the recommendation of a friend. I highly recommend it to anyone concerned about this disease. The author is a medical researcher who was himself diagnosed with prostate cancer, which prompted him to research all of the possible treatments. This is an odd malady because the treating doctor is likely to defer to the patient in deciding the course of treatment. Therefore it is important that patient know his options. This book will educate you without advocating for any particular course of treatment. In our case it was exactly what we needed and provided much information the doctors did not think to tell us.
