Yet, curious and complete as we must admit this new historical picture to be, now and again we come across a hurried generalization, or perhaps even a missing link in the chain of evidence.' It is not always made clear by the followers of the comparative method of historical study, why the Chief authorities for early English institutions should be German, and why a particular institution existing in Germany should be looked upon as the parent of a similar institution existing in England. But the truth is, no systematic attempt, has yet been made to trace out the early history of Britain from the archaic remains that still exist in the land. The materials for early English history are assumed to be lost from that pointwhere literature ceases to give evidence, and all information anterior to this is obtained from the continental home whence we departed from our Teutonic kinsmen.
