Frank Richard Stockton was an American writer and humorist, best known today for a series of innovative children's fairy tales that were widely popular during the last decades of the 19th century. Stockton avoided the didactic moralizing common to children's stories of the time, instead using clever humor to poke at greed, violence, abuse of power and other human foibles, describing his fantastic characters' adventures in a charming, matter-of-fact way.

Delightfully convoluted as only Frank R. Stockton could write them, this picture of the incestuosly gossipy way old ladies in small towns function barely feels dated...although when it does, it's from God awful moments of 19th century racism and sexism. Know the time you're reading, I suppose. (Not that that excuses it or makes it better.)

The Girl at Cobhurst by Stockton is a delightful read that captivated me with its characters and picturesque setting. As the second book I've experienced from this author, it did not disappoint.

While the book turned out to be longer than I anticipated, the story unfolded beautifully, weaving together intriguing plot lines and relationships. The enchanting world of Cobhurst came alive through the author's vivid descriptions, immersing me in its charm and allure.

Among the characters, two stood out for me: the wise and compassionate Doctor, and the spirited Miss Panney. Their interactions brought depth and richness to the narrative, even if Miss Panney didn't achieve her desired outcome. Their presence added a dynamic quality that made the story all the more engaging.

Although the pacing was slower than expected, it allowed for a nuanced exploration of the characters' motivations and the complex dynamics between them. It felt authentic and genuine, drawing me into their world and making their connections resonate.
