A Lucille Mystery #5

Cannoli to Die For

Rate this book
The USA Today bestselling author of Unholy Matrimony is back with a new Lucille Mystery! This time Lucille must track down the killer of a diet guru who had a lot more to lose than just a few extra pounds.

With her best friend Flo’s wedding approaching, Lucille is desperate to trim down and joins Weigh to Lose, a weight-loss program led by a clipboard-wielding harridan who’s as unattractively thin as she is shrill. When the bossy woman turns up dead with her throat slashed and a tasty-looking cannoli stuffed in her mouth, Lucille figures she got her just desserts.

But when the local police come up empty-handed, Lucille sinks her teeth into the mystery and narrows the list of suspects to a husband with a wandering eye, a sexy young Swedish au pair, and a gambler deep in debt to the wrong people. Until one of the suspects becomes the victim of another gruesome murder.

Afraid she’s bitten off more than she can chew and worried that she might be next on the killer’s list, Lucille puts her own neck on the line with a wild plan to trap the culprit and tip the scales of justice.

Mystery writing lets Peg indulge her curiosity under the guise of “work” (aka research). She put pen to paper at age seven when she wrote plays and forced her cousins to perform them at Christmas dinner. She switched to mysteries when she discovered the perfect hiding place for a body down the street from her house.

When she’s not writing, she spends her time reading, cooking, spoiling her granddaughter and checking her books' stats on Amazon.

A former Jersey girl, Peg now resides in Michigan. She is the author of the Open Book Series (written as Margaret Loudon), the Murder, She Reported series, the Cranberry Cove Series, the Farmer’s Daughter series, the Gourmet De-Lite series, the Lucille series, and the Sweet Nothings Lingerie series (written as Meg London.)

Cannoli To Die For is one of the best cozy mysteries I have read. I laughed so much and I wish I could hang out with Lucille.
She is such a fun character, she is easy to relate to and she isn't one to hide under the covers.
In this book, Lucille is preparing for her best friend's wedding. When Flo encourages Lucille to attend Weigh to Lose, a new weight loss program, Lucille agrees, even if it is to lend moral support.
When tragedy strikes and Lucille is the one to find another dead body, she doesn't hesitate to get involved.
With the mysterious deaths becoming a nuisance, Lucille sets out to find her own answers, while trying to stick to the diet plan.
I loved Lucille's version of the diet- pizza sauce is a veggie, cheese is dairy and crust is the bread, voila, of course she can eat pizza!
I really loved this story and the author really created a cast of players that make this seem like you are reading a letter from a friend, describing the most recent small town events.

This is the perfect stocking stuffer for the dedicated cozy mystery fan in your life.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an ARC of this wonderful story.

Princess Fuzzypants here:
We cats know that we are much brighter than humans. It is a fact. Some are fairly bright and some, well not so much. Lucille falls into the latter category. While not being the sharpest knife in the drawer, she is kind hearted and well meaning. The problem is she keeps finding dead bodies. Lucille is also intensely curious so she cannot help wanting to investigate.
Her detective skills are about equal to her dieting skills but somehow, in spite of it all, she does manage to figure out who killed whom.
This case is pretty confusing when the leader of a diet group is killed with a melon scoop. There is no shortage of candidates for who might have killed her. But one by one, shortly after Lucille decides they are the likeliest villain they die or have an alibi. When the pieces finally come together, Lucille and her friend Flo have to fight for their lives.
The fact is Lucille is rather endearing like the old style slapstick comics. She is funny and even as I rolled my eyes, I could not suppress a grin at her antics. This is never going to be a serious mystery or even a serious cozy but it is good for some chuckles.
I give the book four purrs and two paws up.

This is the 5th book in the series but the first that I have read. It can be read as a stand-alone but probably would be better for the reader to read the series in order. It has fun, humor and a murder investigation. What more can you ask for in a well written cozy mystery.
I found this mystery kept me engaged, I didn’t have to look back to remind myself who the characters were or forward to see who did it.
I look forward to reading the first four to catch myself up on the characters.

A good visit

It's always a good time when I visit Lucille and Flo. Th his time I went for Flo's wedding. Lucille had joined a weight loss program, but the leader was murdered. She took it upon herself to find the killer and found another victim instead. So she had to murders to solve with the help of best friend Flo. Like I said, I always enjoy visiting Lucille and Flo. There is never a dull minute.

This book will keep you reading long into the night and you will not want to put this book down until you finish. This was such a great read and full of surprises. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

Lucille Mazzarella wants to lose weight in time for her best friend Flo's wedding. She joins the Weigh to Lose program but is turned off by the nasty leader. Then Lucille finds her dead with her throat slashed and a tasty-looking cannoli stuffed in her mouth. Since the police have not found the killer, Lucille decides to do her own snooping. The suspects include the victim's husband, their young Swedish au pair, and a gambler deep in debt to the wrong people. Lucille takes a part-time job as a receptionist at the real estate office where the victim worked to get more insight into her life. Lucille thinks she has identified the killer until he becomes the next one killed. This was an ok mystery but not particularly memorable.

I received an eARC via Netgalley and Beyond the Page publishing with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and provided this review.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for this E-ARC copy of Cannoli to Die For.
I must first confess I had never read this series before. Lucille is a wonderfully written character that keeps the reader engage in the mystery. Peg Cochran's story is steadily paced and you don't loose interest or want to skip ahead. She times the twist into the story just so that it keeps the reader guessing, but not giving away too much. Since this is book 5 in the series, I had to catch up a little, but not anything that was difficult. I loved her side characters and felt that her cozy mystery was funny with just enough.

I love Lucille! I've read the entire series and loved every one. Lucille happens upon murder and mayhem while living her everyday, middle-class life in New Jersey. She's all about her Italian family and making meals for them while working at the church part time as well. Her extended family is a cast of characters but she loves each and every one of those quirky people. In this book she also works part time in a real estate office which opens up her world. Every time I enter her world it is with a warm feeling of familiarity and love. I stretched this out as long as I could, reading only little bits at a time so I could make it last. I hate it when I have to leave at the end.

I thought this was cute. Maybe I would have enjoyed this more if I had read the others in the series. It took me a while to get through because I kept putting it down. The characters didn't draw me in. I was so looking forward to reading this, but had trouble liking Lucille. I apologize for not being able to give a better review. This just wasn't for me.

Lucille and her friend Flo found themselves smack dab in a murder mystery that occurred in the sanctuary of their church. The police were at a loss as to who done it, but Lucille wasn’t fazed, with a little ingenuity and a curious mind they found themselves following the clues right into peril. A mild, nice and entertaining cozy mystery, with a bit of humor, and a bite of intrigue.
