It's out of print and hard to come by, so if you ever come across one, snatch it up and consider yourself among a special few to have ever encountered the magic of this book. My mom loves it as much as I do and was unwilling to part with the one from my childhood, and you wouldn't believe the lengths she had to go in order to find me my own copy. I'm pretty sure there was only one printing of this book, long ago, and now it seems like there are only about 20 copies in the country and my mom and I hold two of them!
Fergus is a dog-like creature who experiences insomnia while he's supposed to be hibernating. While all his friends are snoozing away, he ventures out into the snow and experiences magic and fun.
The illustrations in this book are gorgeous. My favorite is one that perfectly captures the stillness of the first snowfall of the year, those silent moments when snow makes a blanket on the Earth and no one has yet ruined it with footprints. Turning that page still gives me chill bumps, all these years later.
Someday I will share Fergus with my daughters, but not yet. I'm too afraid they would accidentally rip the pages. For now, Fergus remains my personal treasure.
