Watson’s I Believe in Evangelism is a sound book on the importance of evangelism in the contemporary world. Some prevailing thoughts are still as relevant today as they were in 1976, especially the prognosis of the world as apathetic towards Christianity. His emphases on the centrality of the cross in evangelism (chapter 5) and the need for congregational maturity and cohesion in evangelism (chapters 6-8) are worthwhile reading, and his ability to discern the need for evangelism to engage the modern culture is incredibly helpful.

Although I disagreed with some of Watson’s theological arguments (such as baptism in the Spirit after conversion), his central thesis is universal for Christians, and his arguments are presented convincingly. Overall, an interesting and worthwhile read.

There was a lot that was foundational in David Watson's book on evangelism, with very simple principles. Yet David Watson also as the rare gift of having his finger on the pulse on what is most important, as well as what is most relevant, for the church today. Written with an infectious passion, this would be of great benefit to anyone who reads.

A really great read and I love the scattergun approach Watson uses which does mean some repetition but it then becomes more a point of reinforcement. What was funny was the whole thing about sacred dance!!

This book was recommended to me as part of a useful reading material during an evangelism conference a month ago called Advance2020 - UK. The first thing I would want to say is just because it is old - written in the 70's doesn't mean it is any less useful and relevant. A previous vicar of mine told me this awhile ago and it has proved to be wise words from him. This is a practical book to read - i've made quite a few notes as I have read through it so that I can come back to it. When we come to evangelism the key things for me, from this book, is the need for a church to be open and led by the Holy Spirit. We need his help and his prompting. After all we don't convert anyone but the Holy Spirit does working in the people we meet. We also need to up our praying - both individual and corporately as a church if we are going to have any chance of bearing fruit. This book is no longer in print but you can get very cheap second hand copies from Ade Books. I would thoroughly recommend this book and will be buying extra copies for those who around me who feel that their major gifting is evangelism - although all Christians would benefit from reading this book.
