The "Scholar and the State" oration was originally delivered before the Phi Beta Kappa Chapter of Harvard University June 26, 1890.The "Character in Statesmanship" address was first delivered at St. Paul's Chapel, N.Y., on Tuesday, April 30, 1889 for the centennial of the Inauguration of President George Washington.
