Lost, alone, desperate, Carly Jamison had returned to the Colorado high country, and to the only man she had ever loved--a man she had walked away from years before ....
Rafe Kellard's secluded ranch was a place of healing and comfort, for her and her young son. But there was danger here, too, in the temptation of a passion that had never died--and a secret that could never be revealed ....
For what would this proud, solitary man do if he knew that the boy she'd brought into his home was the son he'd never known he had?
Barbara Ankrum grew up in Upstate New York, training to be a ballerina, but secretly dreaming of being an actress. Her first fangirl crush on Haley Mills led her to practice her British accent on unsuspecting store clerks, and she dreamed of co-starring in the remake of THE MOONSPINNERS. Because she was also a compulsive reader, she discovered that the film was based on a book by the fabulous Mary Stewart, which led to Barbara's lifelong obsession with romantic fiction.
Since Haley Mills was, sadly, not in the market for a co-star, Barbara pursued a degree in English Literature from the University of Tennessee. And when that degree, predictably, led to unemployment, she pulled up her socks and moved to Hollywood where she built a career as a successful commercial actress while raising two amazing (now grown) children with her sweet husband.
Writing romance came naturally from all that reading and the down time between auditions. Once she sold her first book, she said farewell to Hollywood-Land and never looked back. In between writing novels, she got her MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard and optioned a few screenplays. But her first love is, and always will be, romance.
Barbara's emotional, character driven, adventurous historicals (Wild Western Hearts series), her sexy, romantic suspense for Harlequin and her funny, heartwarming contemporaries for Tule Publishing, offer a little something for everyone. Twice nominated for Romance Writers of America's prestigious RITA Award, and her contemporary romance, Holiday Hearts, was made into a Hallmark Movies and Mysteries Christmas movie! Today, she lives in Texas with her husband and a scruffy, adorable rescue dog.
This was a very average book and to be honest both the hero Rafe and heroine Carly annoyed me quite a lot over the course of the book.
Rafe, a former rodoe champ and now a rancher receives a call in the middle of the night about an accident, where they found his name. He soon finds out that the accident involved his ex-girlfriend Carly, who he hasn't seen in nine years since she walked out on him. He goes to get closure and her son's sake who may go into foster care while she recovers and Rafe knows first-hand about foster care.
He goes there, thinks that Evan maybe his son but after finding a family photo with Carly's husband forgets about it. We of course know that he is the father. Carly and Rafe were from different worlds, she wanted to become an attorney and Rafe's experience with abandonment, made him keep a part of himself back in their relationship.
Honestly, I wasn't really pleased with Carly not telling him the truth. Years before she made one phone call but when she thought he had moved on, didn't try again and moved forward in life but never stopped loving him. On my part I was not convinced about the love part because Rafe was a boor and a whiner and I didn't like Carly much as well.
He had been having money problems and instead of letting anyone help, was too prideful. These two never really communicated and viola in the end all is well.
To Love a Cowboy by Barbara Ankrum is such a great read. Once I started this book, I didn't want to put it down. I felt so many emotions while reading, and my heart went out to Carly and Rafe. This book deals with a strong willed cowboy with too much pride and a strong heroine who loves him, despite his faults. I admire Carly's decision for leaving Rafe in the beginning. It was the right thing for her to do, because he was always waiting for the other shoe to drop...so to speak. I really did enjoy Rafe as a character though. I love how he flew to the hospital for Carly, and I love how he was with Evan. Hidden truths will come to surface and test these two characters, but Carly and Rafe are two characters that you will want to root for. Loved the ending!!! Great Read!
