Shaping virtuous, capable daughters through thoughtful education
This classic preface and excerpts lay out a practical vision for educating girls with virtue, faith, and conscience. It argues that a girl’s schooling matters as much as a boy’s, and it explains why diligent, religious training at home or under a trusted tutor is essential to her roles in family life and society. The text emphasizes character, piety, and practical life skills, guiding parents and teachers to cultivate gentle, capable young women who can navigate the world with wisdom and grace.
Reasons why the education of girls is vital for families and communities Guidance on choosing teachers, catechetical methods, and daily practices Strategies for instilling prayer, virtue, and a respectful attitude toward church life Practical notes on early moral formation and balancing instruction with natural development Ideal for parents and educators seeking a thoughtful, religion-centered approach to raising thoughtful, responsible young women.
François de Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon, a Roman Catholic theologian and poet, wrote in France. He today is remembered mostly as one of the main advocates of quietism and as the author of The Adventures of Telemachus, a scabrous attack on the French monarchy, first published in 1699.
This was hysterical. The vast majority of the book is not exactly something that I think should be held to today, but there are some worthwhile parts, such as the sections that explain how you should interact with other people. I would not have survived well in this era, since my mind has already been ruined by education. Then again, if I had enough to do to keep the house running, maybe I wouldn't care quite so much about reading?
