Two and a Half Men in a Boat

Rate this book
Nigel Williams is former producer of BOOKMARK and currently producer of OMNIBUS. Nigel Williams retells how Jerome K. Jerome, George, Harris and Montmorency the fox terrier rowed up the Thames from Kingston to Oxford - which Jerome transformed into the 1889 classic of THREE MEN IN A BOAT. The author's odyssey of the 1990s, made with Alan, J.P. and Badger the lurcher, shows how much Jerome's particular bit of England has changed, and yet remains the same. Besides the comedy inherent in such a journey undertaken by such a quartet, the book also tells the story of Jerome's life.

A thoroughly entertaining and light hearted adventure, recapturing the spirit of Jerome K Jerome famous trip (which he may or may not have actually taken) while also updating on his life and times.

The author's travels closely mirror the original adventurer's antics and his writing style is very much of the same mode.

Great fun.

A fairly enjoyable romp along the river. I must admit I preferred the original.

The endless footnotes were a bit distracting and annoying, particularly the minutely detailed description of the picnic!

I mistook it for the original story when I took it out of my grandma’s bookshelf, but I’m glad I did. It’s a simple story, very amusing, it even made me laugh several times. The author has the capability to introduce great sense of humor while wondering about deeper philosophical questions.

Writer Nigel Williams reenacts the famous trip up the River Thames. I love this book almost as much as the original.

The best book I read this year! I'm not sure if it was just because I finished it while sitting next to the family Christmas tree, filled with good will towards all, but this book is the reason I read travel lit.

The title just about says it all by way of a summary, but there is a lot more going on here than just a simple canoe trip up the Thames. There are tangents on a number of different subjects that provide a great deal of insight into the author's life and thoughts. Wish I could find more titles by this author!

Light and entertaining. A little self-indulgent, but still worth reading for fans of Jerome K. Jerome.
