Reger is trying to emulate Shaara, and doesn't quite pull it off. Though it seems he did do much research, his dialogue almost completely hucksterizes all of the general and leaders of the battle. Almost no single historical characters comes off favorably. Reger does do some credit to everyday foot soldiers with his characters, but not all of them. Would have preferred Reger just write a historical account of the battle instead, and stay away from the personalities he tries to reveal or develop in the historical fiction format. Didn't actually realize this was historical fiction when I ordered it online, but decided to read it anyway. Does offer some salvageable accounts of the fighting and conditions these "amateur" soldiers at start of war found themselves in.
