Although this book recommended for CEO's and board members, I think that other lower level employees can benefit from reading this book. The book is broken down into six major sections: be visionary, be proactive, be curious, be results-oriented, be thoughtful, be self-aware. In addition to the book, there is a website available that offers additional tools. The author believes there is a need for this book since a good chunk of businesses do not have a formal CEO succession process in place. Even those that do, tend to be disappointed with the results. Majority of CEO's interviewed in this book are from Canada and include various business backgrounds. What was appealing about this book was the layout of each chapter. The author did an excellent job about explaining her “be X”. From there she included real life examples of what did and didn't work. She also offered up some self coaching questions to help further solidify the point. The book was very easy to understand and relate to, even if you aren't in immediate line to become a CEO.
Practical and helpful book for aspiring, new, and existing CEOs
I was not sure what to expect on a CEO playbook, I thought it would be more technical and somewhat limited in its approach. I appreciated the fact that Michael and Conlin see CEOs as human beings. Individuals who need to develop themselves in weaker areas and hone in on their strengths. Michael and Conlin also being former CEOs who now coach and develop other leaders is a plus because they share a wealth of experience through real life stories that anyone can relate to. It is clearly demonstrated that leaders are human beings first, can be transparent about their struggles but continually work on themselves as they work on building others or enterprises.
