"Compared with Vietnam or Pakistan, Ulster is no more than a scratch, a local irritation. But that doesn't lessen the madness. It is still a war." Photographs and first hand account of the fighting in Derry, Ireland in 1969.
This is a remarkable book, and a fine piece of photojournalism. I’m fortunate enough to own a copy of the original edition, and while it has been substantially restructured and much of the text updated, it remains as impactful as when it was first published. This isn’t a book that will help you understand the background to or history of the Troubles, or even provide an overview of everything that was happening in Northern Ireland in 1969. But as a snapshot of Derry in those early months, it is peerless, and while the images are by turns sad, funny, haunting and tragic, they will stay with you long after it’s back on the shelf.
