Architecting Spacecraft with SysML: A Model-based Systems Engineering Approach

Rate this book
A Guide to Apply a Model-based Systems Engineering Approach with SysML to Specify and Architect Systems.

This book provides a straightforward guide to develop an architecture model of a Small Satellite using the Systems Modeling Language (SysML®). SysML is a general-purpose modeling language used to specify and architect systems. Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is intended to produce an integrated system model using SysML which reflects multiple views of the system to specify the interaction and interconnection of its components, and their functions, states, interfaces, and performance and physical characteristics. The system model can enhance quality, reuse, and shared understanding of the system.

This book can be used by instructors and students to learn how to apply MBSE with SysML, as well as practitioners of MBSE and organizations as a reference approach for their application.

This slim book makes a good companion to the book Space Mission Engineering: The New SMAD for those interested in learning Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). Having some knowledge of the New SMAD might be helpful because the modeling is done for the FireSatII example from the New SMAD. I thought the numerous diagram examples were quite helpful, although I could have used a bit more explanation for some of them (e.g., why did they choose the representation they chose?). I appreciated having access to the diagrams through their website, which allowed me to explore the connections between the diagrams more through the Cameo Systems Modeler tool.

Going through this book shortly after taking a 5-day workshop in MBSE and the Cameo Systems Modeler tool really helped me gain more understanding of MBSE and using the tool and practice what I learned.
