Thrill to the romance, adventure, and danger air travelers encountered flying to far-flung, exotic lands. Marvel at art deco air terminals, the world’s only flying-boat museum, and onboard luxuries rivaling five-star hotels. Like mythical Camelot, it was a brief, shining moment. But this was no myth.
It was an extraordinary point in global history when Pan American’s quintessentially magnificent flying boats ruled the skies.
A few months ago I read a book about Pan Am’s history which unfortunately glossed over the flying boat era in a single chapter. This book was perfect for filling in the blanks - well structured with lots of personal stories and many photographs & reproductions of documents that complemented the narrative. I also appreciated the attention to details such as the terminal buildings, airplane interiors and the construction of a base at Wake island. Great book, but now I’m yet again sad that I’m not a clipper pilot in the 30s.
