A sudden attack and a dognapping leave K-9 trainer Danica Gage shaken to her core. Even more surprising is her rescuer: P.I. Shane Colton. Years ago her family stole Shane’s freedom, but now Danica needs him to catch a criminal. And she must fight the urge to run into his arms…because wanting him could be a deadly mistake.
Regan Black, a USA Today bestselling author, writes award-winning, action-packed romantic novels featuring kick-butt heroines and the sexy heroes who fall in love with them. She and her husband currently enjoy the empty-nest life in the South Carolina Lowcountry where the rich blend of legend, romance, and history fuels her imagination.
Danica Gage, a K9 dog trainer, was working the overnight shift to supervise two new puppies at the Red Ridge K9 Training Center. While walking the puppies, she has the nagging feeling that she is not alone, which proved right when she came to. She had been drugged, and a trained attack dog, Nico, had been stolen. The local police have their hands full with a recent wave of criminal activities, as well as searching for “the Groom Killer”, so they ask Shane Colton, a P.I. who also consults with the police, to investigate the dognapping. Danica doesn’t mind Shane’s involvement, but he isn’t too thrilled because he has never forgiven what her grandfather did to him.
Regan Black seriously knows her K9, because COLTON P.I. PROTECTOR is positively riveting! For once, I could really appreciate all the work that is asked of the trainers, handlers, and the working dogs themselves. Shane’s dog, a corgi named Stumps, is truly the third leading character in this book; yes, he is cute but watching him work was fascinating, and my respect for the K9 units has grown tenfold because of COLTON P.I. PROTECTOR. There is a long-standing feud between the Coltons and the Gages, it is legitimate, it is not only because the author said so, which is why Shane hates himself in finding Danica so attractive, because what her grandfather did was really heinous. The family dynamics on both sides are rather mystifying, and sadly very believable.
While the chemistry between Danica and Shane is undeniable, I didn’t quite get what spark ignited for that first kiss. It felt as if I had missed something, but then again maybe I did. On the other hand, I really loved a secondary character: Hayley Patton, and I’m not really sure if I should have, but I hope we get to see her again in future instalments, because she has that je ne sais quoi that piqued my interest. The second half of the book lost some of its suspenseful momentum because it focused more on the romance; what can I say? I love action! I was actually stunned at the abrupt ending; it’s not precisely a cliffhanger, but there are still many loose ends left to be tied. The dialogues are incredibly well-written; some of the barbs exchanged between Danica and Shane almost felt like jabs to the chest, and there is so much pain, regret and resentment, which they overcome like the intelligent adults that they are. Regan Black’s writing is as brilliant as ever: she possesses an uncanny ability at recreating a police – and K9 – environment that feels genuine every step of the way; I felt I was part of the team, and I loved it!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thrilling and intense suspense, tragic mistakes by the law enforcement that changed lives, and sweetest, most ardent, swoon-worthy romance, and the pets and four-legged partners who are drawn with specific characteristics, who are vital characters in the story, and who save the day more than once -- there is so much to love about this story, I was enamored from the page one till the end. I read as much of the K-9 stories as I can get my hands into. I love how the dogs contribute to the stories, how they show another side of the human characters, and how they are often in the key position to solve the cases and protect their partners. And how the author, Regan Black, has created Stumps, the corgi partner of the hero, with his characteristics, his love for belly rubs, his need and enjoyment towards the work they did, his protective and serious side vs the playful side, made me fall in love with him. And I loved how he interacted with the heroine's cat, as well. The suspense is two-fold, like often in category series. The immediate case is solved, while the big case in the background keeps stewing. The tension and anticipation of the attacks in the cases at hand are thrilling, the knowledge of the mastermind behind the attacks is frustrating as they are not being able to prove the case, and it puts everything and everybody on the edge while the intensity escalates. The connection between Danica Gage and Shane Colton is bittersweet. Shane's history with Danica's grandfather, the time Shane had to spend in jail for the false conviction, and the consequences for that for both the families, gave enough angst between them to avoid a relationship despite the burning, palpable attraction between them. I absolutely loved how the relationship was developed, the steps they had to take to make it work, the hard conversations they had to open up to so things could evolve to a deeper level. Nothing comes easy, except the physical connection, and Danica and Shane have to decide if the tie between them is enough to do the hard things, to be open, honest, and vulnerable, and work on the issues between the two families. The intriguing and fierce suspense, the charming, likable and relatable characters, both two- and four-legged, drawn with vivid and sharp lines, the romance that is so delightfully sexy and adorable, raw and realistic, that it took my breath away and made me smile... This story has it all from angst, fear, and savagery, to dreamy, sweet, and sensual feels that keep building as the story progress. I was mesmerized throughout the tale, wanting to inhale the story in one sitting... ~ Five Spoons
COLTON P.I. PROTECTOR is full of rich details on the training of dedicated and amazing K-9 dogs. In many ways, this story enriches the entire series for the reader now has a better idea of what goes into creating such unique, loyal and sought after animals. The K-9 unit is an integral part of the Red Ridge police force, and even that is being threatened by the frustration of not capturing whoever is the Groom Killer.
Shane Colton did the hard work of returning home, training as a private investigator and taking his life back after it was brought to light by a witness who decided to tell the actual truth that he was not a murderer, that the arresting officer manufactured his arrest and his eventual conviction of the murder of a young woman. That officer was Danica Gage’s grandfather, so it is with complete irony that Shane would be walking with his Corgi, Stumps, near the K-9 center and happen to look over into the yard to see Danica’s still body on the ground.
Danica had been attacked in the yard of the K-9 center, incapacitated by the injection of something that knocked her out cold while a thief stole a valuable K-9 dog who had not yet been assigned to a handler as this dog was trained to bite… and in the wrong hands, Nico will become a vicious attack dog – on command. As Danica and Shane begin the search for Nico their shared history also plays a part in their working relationship. Two members of opposing feuding families, the granddaughter of the man who lied and sent an innocent young man to jail for life are going to discover that in the end nothing matters except what two people falling in love think about each other.
While I enjoyed COLTON P.I PROTECTOR on many levels, it also frustrated me. The only reason that makes any sense to me to leave the dognapping, theft of a valuable, fully trained K-9 dog and a puppy in training unresolved would be because that will factor into one of the ongoing story threads later in the series. We know who masterminded stealing the dogs, but it cannot be proven yet. So, we add another story thread to the mix with the Larson brothers, those Teflon twins that no crime sticks to even when everything points in their direction. It was even mentioned in one of the earlier stories that one of the Larson twins was angered that a dog from the center would not be sold to him… so go take what he wants seems to be his solution.
The story ends very abruptly. Yes, there are a lot of secret engagements around Red Ridge right now. Who in their right mind would parade an engagement for the killer to have their choice of who their next victim would be? I get that. Still, after everything that Danica and Shane went through to get to their happy ending, there was no easing out of this story and getting ready for the next… and I’m finding that I need that in order to consider a story done. Their romance was full of heartache for many different reasons, they had a lot to resolve between them and individually. Yet, they work well as a couple – and I wanted more for them (and me) than a sudden complete stop.
It was okay, but they didn't find the kidnapped dogs. I felt like the rest of the story was untold. Here is a highlight from the book...
He draped an arm over her shoulders. “I know it sucks that we can’t tell anyone yet.” “Obviously.” She didn’t want a target on his back any more than he’d wanted her in the crosshairs. “That’s why I didn’t bring a ring. But I have one in mind.” She met his gaze and could have happily drowned in the love shining in his blue eyes. “You do?” “Obviously,” he echoed her. His lips curved into that wide-open smile full of temptation that made her want to leap into his arms. “You can have it, eventually, if you give me an answer.” Oh, yes, she wanted to give him an answer. She linked her fingers with his and tried to pretend nothing earth-shattering was happening here on this little bench surrounded by flowers. “Yes,” she whispered. “It will be our secret.” The idea held far more appeal than she might have thought. “They’ll catch Bo’s killer,” he promised. “We won’t be living under the shadow of the Groom Killer forever.” She believed him. “Your sister and cousin will be thrilled to be back in business.” Wedding ideas spun through her mind. “Both our families will be relieved when Bo’s killer is brought to justice,” he said, his gaze drifting down the street. “Then we can spoil that relief with our news,” she teased. “Shouldn’t we leave the Romeo and Juliet spotlight to Valeria and Vincent?” he teased back. This was the side of him she loved most, the confident man who would shelter her from every danger and was willing to let her protect the vulnerable spots he hid from the world. She was the luckiest woman on earth, to have a steady future ahead despite the unanswered questions about the Groom Killer and the dogs she wanted safely back in the custody of the K9 training center. “I love you, Shane Colton.” He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “I love you, too, Danica Gage...Colton,” he added in a whisper.
Attention grabbing intrigue! With the next book in The Coltons of Red Ridge series, Regan Black continues the thrilling build-up of trying to find out who the Groom Killer is, and solving a new crime on the side! With an interesting back story, we watch Danica & Shane feel their way into a quasi friendship that doesn't take long to turn into more. The overall mystery of the series is built up well, and the secondary story line keeps our attention throughout. Quick to read and easy to love!
K-9 trainer Danica Gage never expects to become a victim in her own stomping ground, but when she finds herself needing a hand, she's surprised to see Shane be the one to ride to her rescue! Her family did him wrong years ago and it ended up stealing more from him than she can ever make up for, so she doesn't blame him for his dislike of her and her family one bit!
P.I. Shane Colton has no love loss for any member of the Gage family, but when he stumbles across Danica needing assistance, there's no way he can walk away. Thrust together to try to solve this crime has them working through the past and gaining a new appreciation of each other!
I was gifted a copy of this book by the author so I was not aware that this book is the 5th installment in a series. There are a few references made that probably would make more sense if you started at the beginning of the series and read the books in order to follow the full backstory of the families and timeline of events; however, this book is easy to follow and can be read as a stand-alone. The characters are likable, the dialogue fun and engaging and the storyline plausible and entertaining. I really enjoyed Danica and Shane and their hesitant friendship. With all their family history it was easy to understand their reluctance for more. You can tell she and Shane had an attraction to each other they both tried to deny but working close together it was hard to ignore. They had a lot of baggage to sort through - pain, guilt, regret, and resentment – but they did it logically, as adults, not with tempers and childish acts, and came out the better for it in the end. You can tell the author does her research well in this story in relation to the K9 training facility and references to commands and other information regarding the dogs. It was very interesting to read about and I loved that there was an adorable Corgi front and center in the action. Their story does kind of abruptly end, so I am wondering what is in store next for this couple and the series. Overall a fun story that holds your attention from start to finish. I look forward to going back and learning about these families from the beginning.
Colton P.I. Protector is another fun Harlequin Romantic Suspense book by Regan Black. Main characters: Danica Gage and Shane Colton, have a complicated relationship in Red Ridge, South Dakota. There is bad blood between the two families. Danica's grandfather, an officer in the RR Police Department, had railroaded an investigation and sent Shane to prison for a crime he didn't commit. When Shane was exonerated, he returned to Red Ridge to make the most of his second chance. Danica and Shane are now forced to spend time together when they work an attack/dognapping case at the Red Ridge K9 Training Center. This was an entertaining story where despite their pasts, opposites attract. I enjoyed reading a book that had a out of the ordinary plot and included animals. This book actually has more than one mystery to solve. Readers will have to wait for a future book to get all the answers.
Regan Black as a author is becoming an addiction. I love the way she brings characters to life. Shane Colton went thru something that leaves a mark that can go one of two ways. I really like how Regan brings that out in the story. Many people who end up in prison have 2 roads to choose. Shane choose the hardest road and that was not to go back. I liked the way she showed how hard a choice that was. I've seen to many go back in because they can't resist the temptation of doing things that they find easy. I also the strength of character she showed in Danica Gage. She was a good compliment for Shane. I found myself turning the page to see what was happening next. I will be looking for the rest of the books in this series because I want the answers that are left at the end of this book. Its done in such away that I'm curious to find them. Regan did a excellent job with this book she kept the action steady and the mystery going. I'm sure curious about what is next.
Part of the Coltons of Red Ridge series, in which K-9 trainer Danica Gage is attacked and a key dog she's been training is stolen. When a puppy also is taken the next day, PI Shane Colton is brought in to help her gain the information needed to arrest a pair of twin brothers everyone assumes is behind the thefts, even though they don't have sufficient proof to send the cops in for an arrest.
Shane is certain it's an inside job, one involving a troubled teen, but Danica doesn't want to believe it. What she also doesn't want to believe is that he might love her. After all, the Coltons and Gages are like the Hatfields and McCoys after Shane was wrongly convicted of a murder, for which he served 18 months until exonerated.
As this mystery plays out, love looks like it will win out, but the story doesn't end with the last page of this book, a frustration for me.
To be accused, tried, convicted, sent to prison for a crime you didn’t commit, and then to be found not guilty and expected to start over is hard for Shane Colton. Went back home and rebuilt his life with a hardness in his heart. When Danica Gage (her grandfather railroaded Shane into prison)is attacked Shane’s ice around his heart begins to melt. Can he keep her safe, keep his heart safe from her charms, and find and prove beside a shadow of doubt who attacked her and stole the trained protection dog and pup? A chemistry that sends sparks flying as Danica and Shane try to heal the past hurts and restore their lives. Throw the Bridegroom killer into the mix and you have a story that keeps you turning pages until the end.
Very enjoyable! I really enjoyed Shane and Danica as individual characters. Shane has been through a lot and really come out on the other side. This book was an almost Romeo and Juliet theme with the two opposing families, and I did enjoy the romantic tension and build up. Danica is a strong heroine who is passionate about her work. I found the K-9 training aspects of this book to be incredibly interesting, and I felt like I learned something new.
This is the first I have read of this series, and I didn't realize how much of the subplot would really flow into the next book. The ending did feel abrupt with some unresolved threads, so I guess I'll need to pick up the next book to learn more!
This story is part of an ongoing series that several authors participate in. As a dog lover and dog rescuer I really enjoyed this book, but at the same time it tugged at my heart . There is a HEA between Shane and Danica but not a resolution to the dog issue :( . I enjoyed the realistic build up in the relationship, especially considering their past history. Think Hatfield and McCoy in the present time. I appreciated the little nuggets about K9 training and its made me take a second look at our real life heroes in all walks with their K9 counterparts. I asked for a copy of this arc and am glad I was granted a copy. All opinions are my own. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys suspense, romance, mystery and dogs.
Being the fifth author in an ongoing continuity series is never easy. You have to address your readers who will pick it up just because you wrote it, but haven’t read any of the previous for books; while also satisfying the readers who are firmly invested in the series and have read everything previous. Such is the case with Regan Black’s latest, Colton PI Protector. I was one of the former readers and while I wished I had a little more background, Black covered all the high points so I didn’t feel lost as I was reading. I enjoyed Black’s trademark style as she kept the action moving. While I would have liked a few of the more obvious loose ends tied up, it might prompt me to pick up the final book in the series.
The Groom Killer is still not caught. That evidently is the overriding theme 4 this series. Feud between the Coltons and the Gages is emphasized. But lots of romance going on between these families. .There was no resolution for the two kidnapped dogs which was VERY unsatisfactory..doubt i will read more n this series. (Stumps = Corgi K9.) Shane Colton & Danica Gage r unofficially engaged @ book’s end. The PI Protector is an investigator 4 police & some outside parties..she trains dogs.

Shane and Danica make a great team. Both have to overcome a lot of pre conceived ideas. This is a edge of your seat book. Can't wait to find out what happens.
Wow what a book. Engaging, suspenseful, heart warming, funny and a fast read. I highly recommend this book. Once I started reading it, I could not stop.
This is the first story of this series I have read, and, although there is a story thread which continues throughout the series, this works as a standalone telling the story of Shane Colton and Danica Gage. This story has it all – mystery, intrigue, conflicts arising from past misdeeds, family feud, angst, and, of course, hard won love.
Regan Black weaves quite a tale. We are sent on a roller coaster ride watching the suspense unfold surrounding the threat to Danica’s beloved K9’s she trains, the serial killer on the loose in Red Ridge, and Shane dealing with the chip he has against Danica’s family and the budding love that’s developing between the two, while he’s trying to protect her.
This may seem like alot to keep up with, but the flow of the action is so smooth you won’t have any problem. It’s an easy book to read and will keep your interest from beginning to end. You’ll love her characters, especially the 4-legged variety. I will forewarn you, when you get to the end, you will want to read the next in the series because there is still more to the underlying story.
I highly recommend this read. It’s a great story!
I am voluntarily providing an honest, unbiased review of an ARC of this book.
Danica Gage is a K-9 trainer for a training facility. One night, one of the dogs is stolen and, the problems just keep getting worse from there. Shane Colton is a P.I. sent to investigate the dog nappings and, protect Danica. Problem is that things go from bad to worse and, even though Danica feels horrible about what her family did to Shane years ago, she can't help feeling more than gratitude for Shane's help. Unfortunately, the people doing these horrible things are determined to get to Danica, too. Shane will do anything to keep her safe!!!
