Rate this book
Blackrock isn't like any other town - Kasey is about to find that out, the hard way.

Hexes, witches and an ancient curse? It sounds like a fantasy story to army brat, Kasey, but when she witnesses magic with her own eyes, she can't deny that Blackrock is a weird place to live. It's about to get even weirder.
The descendants of the witch who cursed the town, are after a black quartz crystal which stores enormous power. If the wrong one gets their hands on it, then the town is in big trouble. Flirty goth, Ash is one possible descendant, and the most powerful witch in town. He's also starring in most of Kasey's dreams lately, whether she likes it or not.
Viola is snarky, powerful and vengeful. She takes an instant dislike to Kasey, and as a potential descendant, she is not someone to make an enemy of.
When Kasey gets her hands on the crystal, it's up to her to decide who gets it. But if she makes the wrong choice, it could get her killed.

A very enjoyable read.

When Kasey moves to a new town with her family, she automatically assumes it's going to be awful.
It's a situation many of us can identify with, although we've probably never had it go quite so badly as it does for her. In this, the author cleverly makes the reader identify with Kasey, and by that time, they're hooked on the mystery of what's been going on in Blackrock.

The story is interesting and complex enough to keep the reader guessing right up to the last page. The characters are believable and vividly drawn, each with their own flaws and secrets, so that anyone really could be the troublemaker. It's natural for the reader to distrust them, but in having them distrust one another, the author creates seeds of doubt that help to drive the story and give it depth.

I found 'Blackrock' to be a very enjoyable read.

Very good with some problems.

I wanted to give this four stars, but there were sections that tended to look more like expanded outlines than a story that 'flowed' evenly. There were also too many unbelievable parts to the story.

I know it is YA, but it seemed as if all the adults were idiots and completely oblivious to the magic even though they grew up with it and the town's history themselves. Insufficient gate and perimeter security for such a high level research facility was also completely unbelievable.

The uneven writing style and two major plot malfunctions killed the fourth star, but it was otherwise an enjoyable read.
