The National Geographic Society (NGS), headquartered in Washington, D.C., United States, is one of the largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations in the world.
Founded in 1888, its interests include geography, archaeology, and natural science, the promotion of environmental and historical conservation, and the study of world culture and history. The National Geographic Society's logo is a yellow portrait frame—rectangular in shape—which appears on the margins surrounding the front covers of its magazines and as its television channel logo. Through National Geographic Partners (a joint venture with The Walt Disney Company), the Society operates the magazine, TV channels, a website, worldwide events, and other media operations.

Explore the night sky; learn about planets, stars, and constellations. Learn the skywatching basics, then explore the stars, the moon, the planets, and flying objects.

Skywatching Basics helps readers discover the right equipment for observing the stars in the night sky and understanding celestial orientation. The Stars explores the Milky Way and beyond, and discusses how they are constantly moving and evolving. The Moon looks at Earth’s closest celestial neighbor to learn about its makeup, its phases, and lunar exploration. The Planets looks at the solar system, its terrestrial planets, and the giant gas planets. Flying Objects explores asteroids and comets as well as synthetic satellites.

Constellations and star charts are also included.

This introduction to the wonders of the night sky has much to offer the amateur astronomer.

Highly recommended.
