Along with his wife and daughter, Matt lives as a digital nomad, traveling the world while researching for his novels. He reads approximately a bazillion books a year, loves video games, and relaxes by binge watching Netflix with his wife.
Matt writes retellings of mythology as dark, gritty fantasy. His passions of myths, philosophy, and history inform his series. He strives to combine gut-wrenching action with thought-provoking ideas and culturally resonant stories.
As a child, Matt read The Lord of the Rings with his parents. This sparked a lifelong obsession with fantasy and started him on a path of discovering the roots of fantasy through mythology. In exploration of these ideas, the Eschaton Cycle was born—a universe of dark fantasy where all myths and legends play out.
Matt Larkin hits another home run with this, the third in the RUNEBLADE SAGA.
Starkad and Hervor continue their quest to find the next Runeblade, Skofnung. The adventure continues and takes the two through the MIDGARD WALL and into Jotunheim - land of the Giants and another of the nine realms. Meanwhile, the draug Orvar-Oddr continues his plotting and path to vengeance even though it destroys innocents along the way.
This supporting series to the RAGNAROK ERA books has found its own way and is rushing towards even more excitement, disaster, loss, and even joy - small amount that it might be.
This review is an honest, unbiased appraisal of this book received as an Advanced Readers Copy.
Disclaimer first: I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I've been looking forward to this third instalment of the Runeblade Saga ever since I finished Days of Bloody Thrones, and Matt Larkin did not disappoint.
Overall, Days of Frozen Hearts didn't feel quite as dark as Bloody Thrones, and rather closer in "spirit" (ha!) to the first book in the series, Days of Endless Night.
Again, Hervor and Starkad get to travel to a land of legend - this time they venture into Jotunheim, home of Giants and vargar, where they have to battle ghosts and fire vaettir before they can claim their prize, Skofnung.
In a secondary story arc, an old friend/foe continues his quest for revenge, and (ab)uses Ecgtheow/Tiny - who really grew on me in Bloody Thrones - to start a war for his own ends.
I love this series! Seriously! Days of Frozen Hearts has us mostly following Starkad and Hervor on their search for the runeblade, Skofnung. They must journey beyond the Midgard Wall to Jotunheim, Land of the Jotunnar. Giants beyond compare with the compulsion for human flesh. They must face wolves the size of mammoths, ghosts and fire spirits! That's just the beginning of their woes. I This story is dark, raw, gritty, and bloody. Promising suspense, honor, hope and love!
