An interesting story set at the end of the 18th century, London, with a dash of historical fiction thrown in.

When our main character, a nihilistic gambler, wins too big at the gambling den, he's basically forced into acquiring a young foreign slave girl who was made into a mute. Despite him not actually having much use for a slave (or so he says, as he's quite lazy and barely cooks for himself), in a wholesome way he hires her as a maid to let her earn her living and ends up finding that he cares enough to protect someone...

The gambling scenes are quite well explained, and the strategy (and cheating) on display is top-notch.
