Personal Response: I admired how this book took a very complicated story and simplified it into something that children could understand. I also really liked how the book created and defined its own list of vocabulary words and words to watch for when reading. I also enjoyed how each page looked different. The placement of words, type of picture (map, picture, painting, etc.), and the borders were all different on each page to keep it interesting. I think this would be a good way to teach children about a historical figure in a way that they can understand.

Purposes:
- ages 5-7
Read Aloud for Enrichment:
- (especially for younger kids) print a copy of the page that tells you things to watch for in the book, and put the copy somewhere where children can see it while you read to them. They should hopefully be able to realize when some of those things appear in the story.
- can ask students if they have heard of him before and see if they know anything about him
Read Aloud for Curricular Purposes:
- could read as a history lesson or part of an American history unit
- new vocabulary like jewels, spices, islands, compass, explorer
- could plan an activity where obstacles are set up in the classroom, and the students must try to find a new route to get from one place to another. This would represent what Columbus was trying to do, and they could take turns trying to be like Columbus
Other:
- could read for Columbus Day

Christopher Columbus is a biograhical book written by Lisa McCormik. Christopher was born in Italy and was the first person to sail the world. The book presents the text for a class of first grader's and second grader's. This book is good inreference to the vocabulary usage and it recalls the main concept of his life which allows student's ages 5 and six to read. The book gives the dates of events, great illustrations such as the people in the continets he seen, the things he was searching for (food, jewelery, gold and etc...), and the statue of him in Genoa, Italy.

This book could help quiz students about the main idea of Christopher Columbus.

This book about Christopher Columbus and his expedition to the West. This book would be a good book to read during a small group or guided reading practice in first or second grade. It gives facts about Christopher Columbus and his journey. Some vocabulary words are compass, explorer and spices.
This would be good to read during the historical lesson before Thanksgiving, or around Columbus Day.

This book does a good job explaining Christopher Columbus's explorations. The book identified every thing he used to explore with and prepare himself with. This book is great for a history lesson because it give them a timeline of when he explored to different locations and what he was hoping to find. The students can create a timeline when they finish reading the book.
