Written a good while after the German Nibelungenlied, the Volsunga Saga is a prose retelling of the Eddic Heroic poems and passages borrowed from the Thidrekssaga af Bern. While this edition is not as scholarly as R G Finch's text and translation, it's still worth picking up for the Norna-Gests þáttr version of the Volsung legend. Anderson also gives a short summary of the little known Niflunga Saga and an essay comparing the Volsunga saga with the older Niflunga Saga and the Nibelungenlied, also touches on the question of the Altere Not.

Excellent example of Viking literature. A prequel to the Saga of Ragnar Lodbrok. Definitely not for the faint of heart.
