Out of sorts one sunny afternoon, I rummaged an old bookbasket and unearthed a book which once belonged to my mother. Sorry I didn’t have a real yard for my dog to be a dog, I leashed up Etta for the great outdoors, tied her to the porch railing & settled on the stoop. As I browsed the pages of ‘Psychic Pets & Spirit Animals,’ True Stories from the Files of FATE Magazine, I stumbled upon ‘Guardian Dog, Guardian Angel’ written by D. Roger Martin in May 1980.
Indexed as Animals and Life After Death, Martin recounts his beloved dog Rusti who accompanied him everywhere, even on the job, who died, and who subsequently appeared to him in the Vermont backwoods one night while walking the river where he always fished with his pal. And before his very eyes, his dog was then swept away toward the footbridge where his body had been buried.
Upon concluding the story, I cried remembering our dog Shauncy who ended this life as roadkill on Thanksgiving Day in 1985.
Shortly thereafter, I was out gathering kindling. Of a sudden I glanced up and, oh my, there she was, bounding homeward through borderline trees. In awe, I stood there & watched this dash through time until she stopped at the front door & vanished!
This author’s story was beyond moving, so much so that I grabbed his persona and created the central male character in my nonfiction books. Me being me, I addressed a letter to the author c/o FATE Magazine. No reply, I phoned the publisher only to hear, “No return address.” If anyone out there knows D. Roger Martin, please direct him to me.
Thank you.

Purchased new at the mall when I was 10, my paperback copy is worn, wrinkled and faded, but it's as cherished now as it was when I read it over and over again, especially on long car trips, dazzled and enchanted by stories I believed without a doubt. They were old even then -- first published between the 1950s and the 1980s, the actual events had often taken place decades earlier -- but I could picture them all so sharp and clearly in my mind.

Rereading it today, I was hit with that familiar shock you get when you first encounter a childhood favorite you haven't read in a while. The lines unfolded themselves before me like long-idle prayers. The family of raccoons who came for grapes during an extreme heat wave, the wild stallion tamed by a little girl ("All Things Wild and Lonely" is by far my favorite story; I wanted to be her), the man who came back for his dog, the Hellhound of Beccles, "Ralph Baker had ridden out of this world on a ghost horse," and the farm horses Dan, Beauty and Little Meg who were never parted in life or death...these are just some of the stories that stayed with me over the years.

Some of them are spine-tingling, many more are comforting reassurances that our pets are never truly gone, and some of the psychic stories raise intriguing questions I would prefer never to have concrete answers to. All are unforgettable, even if only because they are soaked in childhood nostalgia. I'm okay with that.

I'm a huge reader of supernatural books and anything that involves pets. When I was browsing online for books, I came across this and knew I wanted to read it.

This books is a compilation of stories from Fate Magazine. For anyone not familiar, Fate Magazine specializes in stories about the paranormal.

In this book, Fate Magazine put together some of their popular stories from readers about animals and their spiritual communication. The stories range from Animal ESP to Animal Ghosts to Mystery Animals. Each story offers a great tale about the spiritual part of animals. It shows how animals have psychic abilities and their strong bond with humans.

For anyone who’s a paranormal fanatic and animal lover, this is a good book to read.

Kinda goofy, kinda entertaining about mostly folklore type animal stories. Some are more interesting than others. Some also very terrible "science" bits.
