Edric Walcott Vredenburg was born on March 29, 1860, in the city of Para, Brazil, the son of barrister-at-law Watson Vredenburg. After finishing school, Edric served as Lieutenant of the 3rd Battalion of the Essex Regiment and also worked as a journalist.
During his long literary career, Vredenburg wrote children’s stories and fairy tales and worked as the editor for publisher Raphael Tuck and Sons. In this capacity, he edited over twenty-five volumes for the illustrated series Raphael House Library of Gift-Books for Boys and Girls. The collection was very comprehensive and included amongst others legends from Old Britain, Italy, France, Japan, Russia and the Nordic countries, stories from Tennyson, Scott, Longfellow, Dickens, Shakespeare, and Lewis Carroll, as well as classic fairy tales and fables by Hans Christian Andersen, the Brothers Grimm and Aesop.
His own children’s stories appeared in the volumes Curly Heads and Long Legs, Golden Locks and Pretty Frocks, and Tinker, Tailor as well as in Father Tuck’s “Golden Gift” series.
He also published The Haunted House in Berkeley Square in 1891.
