Not that bump in the night fear, when your stomach jumps into your throat for a few seconds. I’m talking about real fear. The kind that chills you to the bone, ties your insides in knots and leaves you paralysed.

Welcome to my life. I spend my days constantly looking over my shoulder, searching for the source of the paranoia that stalks me. I can’t escape it, not this time. He won’t make those mistakes again. I’m trapped in his game, a reward for his lifetime of bloodshed.

Until he decides to end it, I am his.

“Sweet Callie, you are my reward. It all ends with you.”

Emma had a dream. It took a long time to realise that dream.

When it finally happened, it came via a career as a pre-school teacher, becoming a Mum of three, and 15 years as an army wife, following her husband from posting to posting across the UK and Europe while he served his country. She and her family have now left the army bubble and split their time between the UK and Spain.

In between masquerading as a domestic goddess and drinking gallons of sangria in the name of staying cool she has, at last, sat down and listened to the voices in her head.

Emma writes strong female leads who enjoy running in circles around the men who turn to mush for them. Her books can be dark and twisty, with bloodshed before the happy ever after, but she’ll get you there. Eventually.

I'm kicking myself that Educating Callie has been sitting on my kindle just waiting to be read all this time because it was one of those phenomenal can't put down reads full of suspense, intrigue and a close knit group of friends I instantly wanted to join (and I'm not a friend joiner!)

You know there's always one guy in a book you want to throat chop. Usually it's the antagonist. And while this book had a great baddie ... seriously, I didn't guess who it was until the reveal. But this time around it was Jase. Oh, that guy! It's the mark of an amazing writer who can make me hate the man for most of the book, and be angry at Callie for not kicking him where it hurt for all his idiotic actions. But then something miraculous happened, the author made me feel for this guy. Callie, for all that happened to her, had an amazingly large capacity for forgiveness and it's what warmed me to her. I wouldn't make her decisions with some of the people in her life, but I got it. She was a fighter and a sweetheart.

This man had come into my life at the worst possible time, but it felt right. Who's to say how long you should go between relationships, who decides whether it's too soon?

This book was a glorious read. And I don't usually delve into the suspenseful often. It's not romance, but it does have a gorgeous love story woven between the pages of this who-done-it tale. And one you don't want to miss.

I loved being in this little town and can't wait for more.

I am not sure how to classify this serial killer read, considering that it had a much heavier dose of romantic build up than it did dramatic tension. It was almost as if the criminal activity was an afterthought to spice up the relationship between the two main characters. I did very much enjoy the novel, but it did rather feel like too great a percentage was spent on the ambivalent pairing of Adam and Callie, backgrounded by a strange, almost tenuous wait for the serial killer to finally re-appear and kidnap the heroine. By that point I was ready to bind and gag her myself. But don’t let me discourage you! The descriptions alternate between a quick, dry wit and a clarity of description that is fluid and engaging. My expectations were constantly deferred, but make no mistake, Mills is a very enjoyable curl up and chow down night feast of visual victuals. If you don’t mind the romance taking precedence, then this Voracious Readers Only selection will slay you!

Overview:
Adam & Callie. Standalone suspense novel. Dual POV (Callie and the killer). Instant attraction but slow burn. It has a HEA and an epilogue.

“I live in the light, but the darkness lives in me.”

Adam
Adam is a cop and needs a new start after his brother was killed in a robbery, so he ends up in Frost Ford. Since his brother’s death, he has struggled to let go of his guilt and move on. His cousin Greg lives in Frost Ford and is also a cop, so Adam quickly moves into his cousin’s social circle and finds his place among a new group of friends. He’s an easy going guy who apparently is “drop dead gorgeous”.

Callie (aka Angel)
Callie works in a pub and is trying to recover from being abducted. She is strong, but has struggled with freeing herself from the trauma of the past. She is a twin and is part of an extremely close knit group of friends who have known each other for many years. She is tired of letting the darkness consume her and tired of being afraid. She knows her captor is out there lurking, so she lives in fear he will someday take her again.

Together
Callie and Adam have an instant connection and he makes her feel safe. There is a lot of drama they have to deal with as she struggles to actually break with her cheating ex. Adam always puts Callie’s needs first and is very understanding when it comes to all she is dealing with. They are open and honest with each other and share all the hurts and fears they are holding inside. They don’t need to pretend with each other. They have chemistry, but it is a very slow burn and then when they do get together at the end of the book it is all behind closed doors. Therefore, this book does not have any hot and steamy sex scenes.

Overall
There are MAJOR grammar issues throughout the entire book and it’s the first thing I noticed right away. I typically stop reading when sentence structure is so bad, but Callie’s abduction had me hooked so I stuck with the story. Another thing that slightly irritated me was that the author didn't identify the current POV. Sometimes it took reading a couple sentences to know which character POV you were reading from. Argh.

I actually determined who the psycho was early on, but it wasn’t obvious (I’m a good detective 😉). I didn’t like that the author made the ex boyfriend appear controlling and bipolar without identifying what was behind his behavior. I think it was a ploy to hate the ex so that the reader would love the new guy, but it wasn’t needed. After all the years of being close friends, Jase deserved a better fate.

After the initial abduction and escape, I felt the book dragged. The fact that this was a close group of friends was evident and I didn’t need pages and pages and pages of them hanging out and playing games, drinking, having barbecues and sleepovers. That didn’t really add anything to the story. This book could have easily been cut by 100 pages. Also, I felt like the ending was rushed. I have no idea how she was abducted again (from her college, I think). In this day and age, how could there not be any cameras that didn’t catch the 2nd abduction? I have no idea if the police even asked for any type of footage as the reader doesn’t get that POV, but c’mon. It wasn’t plausible that he took her out in the open and no one saw him carry a drugged women to his car.

So, I had some issues with the story. It was entertaining, but because of the grammar issues, the way it dragged in the middle and the rushed ending I just thought it was ok.

Trigger: stalker, abduction, cheating ex, psycho killing people

Quotes
“There’s a difference between jealous and territorial, love. Jealousy is wanting what you haven’t got. Territorial is protecting what’s already yours.”

“The people we love always know, even if we don’t say the words.”

“I’m fighting for you Angel. I’ll always be here to fight with you and for you. I will fight every day by your side. I’ll stay in the shadows when you want me to. But when you need me, when you get tired, I’ll step out of the shadows and protect what’s mine. Together, just like we promised.”

“Little things make a big difference?” He mused.
“To me they do.”  I shrugged. “I don’t need expensive jewellery and meals in posh restaurants. I want a look, a hug, a kiss, magic words, a squeeze of my hand every day”

“He didn’t break you, because you won’t give him that kind of power over you. You are proof that you can walk through hell and come out the other side an angel.“

“When I’m with you, it’s the only time I feel like I can finally breathe again. You wear your darkness like a badge of honour, it strengthens you and you’ve taught me how to do the same.”

I raced through this excellent thriller. There were so many potential candidates for the mystery killer which the author left gradual clues about to help narrow them down. There was a fantastic but not overdone sense of anticipation as I awaited the inevitable repeat abduction, wondering how and when it would occur. I also really liked the brief first person accounts of the killer himself. A great read.

The English town of Frost Ford has a nightmare secret, it is home to a serial killer. A killer who lives in plain sight. Callie has got away once, but can she escape the killer's plans again.
Wanted to read more about the serial killer's history rather than the emphasis being on the group of friends and all their social interactions, which really were not of much interest. They all seemed to be too perfect to be true and all in love with Callie. Unfortunately I did work out who the guilty party was. Overall three stars because I did enjoy a big part of the book.

Received a complimentary copy of this novel from the author through Voracious Readers Only in exchange for an honest review.
What a rollercoaster of a ride this was. A real page turner full of suspense.
The story revolves around Callie, her twin brother and their group of very close friends. The relationships between the individuals is so in depth that you feel that they have become your friends as well. Poor Callie has a lot to put up with, she’s in a controlling relationship with a hunk that she met at school and was kidnapped by a deranged serial killer who wants to mould women into what he sees as the perfect lady. After escaping him her life starts to spiral downwards as the events of her capture continue to plague her both awake and asleep. But he hasn’t finished with his lessons and when women start to go missing and then turn up dead with the same injuries that she has Callie realises that he is still out there watching and waiting.

What a way to debut. I though Educating Callie was a superbly written novel. It has intrigue, suspense, romance, highs and lows all wrapped up around a wonderful bunch of friends and the new dreamy Sergeant in the town. The writing is slick, fun and heart breaking. I highly recommend this as your next book to read.

I.. liked the book and gave it four stars. The story is pace-y,engaging and full of twists and turns.. I received the book from Voracious Readers Only as a FREE review copy. The heroine, Callie is, like me, two-thirds Joan of Arc, one third Minnie Mouse. The two sides of her personality have wonderfully entertaining disputes throughout the story.especially when it comes to the previously mentioned odd sorts. Herein lies the rub. If I have nits to pick, they are these: the old retired English teacher in my head kept wanting to add commas when a person was addressed by name,I kept getting flashes of Callie going through the tulgy wood chanting, "Cavemen, and Psychos, and Nellies,oh,my!",and ,*SPOILER*There's not one decent straight man who knows how to treat a lady, nor a non- flammable gay man in the whole work!On the positive side, the author adroitly shifts POV and makes several possible suspects plausible in their turn.Fans of Agatha Christie and Ngaio Marsh will love this book!

This book is like a game of cat and mouse and is like a guessing game. It's written in such a way that allows the reader to have suspects and rule out suspects as the story develops breeding some paranoia but adding to the thrill of reading! I cant say too much without spoilers but Educating Callie is a dark and thrilling book also filled with love, friendship and light.

Callie is a kick ass main character, sting and feisty but she also has a vulnerable side due to her experiences, her darkness. The author wrote of Callies experiences so well that it was easy to feel the emotions she was going through. all of Callies friends and her brother Cam are also great characters that will have you wanting to be in their circle.

A great book of twists and turns that will turn your head with thoughts of who the killer is!

Not my usual genre, so was sceptical. But loved it from the first pages right to the end. Loved how it was written, enabling me to easily imagine the scenes and each characters quirky personality. Liked how it kept you guessing who the seriel killer was, giving only clues. Loved the relationship between all the characters. Have already recommended this book to a friend and encourage all to read it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this dark and tantalizing mystery. Through the whole thing up until the big reveal I was marking and discarding the people I thought might be the killer. I was highly entertained. It does go a bit slowly, but a good mystery does. The characters are all well developed, and the depravity of the villain feels very, scarily real.

I also listened on audible and really enjoyed Fiona Weaver reading it. She doesn’t do individual voices, it’s more of a straight read through, but its still easy to tell which characters are speaking in the dialogue. She gives good emotion to everything she says, and honestly, she’s just pleasant to listen to.

A fantastic read. It is riveting from start to finish! The ending was kind of a shock but that is what makes it even better. But expect to be up all night reading because you will not want to put it down.

Callie has a lot of friends surrounding her, she has a twin brother, and a boyfriend. Someone abducted her and what follows is a psychological suspense storyline. Who took her, why have they taken her. This book is very well written, the story builds and has you guessing along the way. Its a page turner!

Okay, so this thriller got me! It's been a long time since an author has been able to surprise me with who the villain turned out to be. Omg. I was mortified and surprised at the same time. Well done!

Great book and characters!

Loved the book and characters. I loved how close they all were and Adam and Callie's relationship was so heartwarming. Slow Burn between them but it helped establish a deep friendship first.

So this book is centered on a girl with my name...creepy, right? I kinda thought so. This girl has everything right down to my personality! (Psst, I'm even a twin...plot twist, I ate my twin in utero, so we don't have that in common, phew!!)...Anyway, Callie (Or CeeCee, Calindra, Cee, Moonbeam, Angel, Love, or the many many names she goes by in this book), is the fun-loving barwench at a local pub called the Irish Rover owned by her friend Mick. You'll meet him. She is surrounded by family and friends, and of course her boyfriend, Jase. Not to beg too many spoilers, but she's known by everyone and everyone loves her. Only there's someone out there who might love her a little too much. (YIKES!) Yeah, THAT someone. The serial killer creepster nobody ever wants showing up at their party!! The problem is, nobody knows who it is. When you read this book, maybe you'll pick it up right away or maybe you'll look at the faces of each of her friends and the paranoia will start to sink in...who knows?!? I don't normally read books without paranormal twists, but this one was one of the few that made the cut! I really enjoyed it.

What a read

What a fantastic story. I was not quite sure what I was getting into when I started this book but let me tell you that I was hooked from the beginning. The suspense, drama and twists and turns had me continuously guessing. Callie is a character that is a true fighter and I found myself in awe of her strength and perseverance. All of the characters were addicting and personable. If you want to read a hell of a story this is one you definitely do not want to miss.

I won this book in a competition so i went into read the blurb, straight away i knew this book was right up my street to read as i love a physiological thriller as this is my preferred genre to read.

Wow what a way to debut, this was a fantastic read with plenty of twist and turns but with love and friendship and realistic characters that you love.It was a rollacoaster of a ride with great dialogue, the plot got me intrigued where i was damn sure i knew who the serial killer was only then to have a curveball thrown where i then didn't have a clue.

This kept me on the edge of my seat not knowing from one minuet to the next who i was going to be suspicious of next.It held my attention throughout and the relationship between all the characters was realistic filled with love and light.

I absolutely adored Callie and all her coven witches her craziness and her deep friendships with all her male guys. This was a very very enjoyable read highly recommended.

I received this book from Voracious Readers Only a while ago, and finally dusted it off (metaphorically) . The premise is the main character was able to escape the clutches of a deranged serial killer, and now the story takes place aftewards. I totally forgot that this was taking place in Britain, as I assumed it was in North America and got confused by the British references suddenly (lol). The characters were likeable, but I found there were so many, and since they were all given nicknames by the protagonist, it was challenging to keep track of them. I thought this was very well written, but by the end I honestly disliked Callie - the main character - she seemed to behave like an adolescent - flirting with all the boys, but still being loved by all the girls too. Seems a little far fetched IMHO . But overall good read, will probably read the next one 😊

Something I loved about this book: the absence of precise, overdone physical descriptions. I have no idea what Callie looks like other than the fact that she's short. As far as I can remember, Adam only ever once called her beautiful at the end. They were clearly mutually attracted to each other, but Mills didn't waste words on superfluous descriptions.

Something I didn't love: I kept feeling like I was missing chunks of the romance. Like, when did they become this close? It was as though I skipped chapters and I was left scratching my head but shrugging and continuing.

I am a big reader of romance, though new to thrillers, so I enjoyed the blend of the two in this book.

Psyche

Goodness...what Callie is surrounded by, in her family and close friends,
Gracious....What the teacher expects Callie to be,
Me....A reminder of who Callie truly is, whom Adam wants and not the person whom the Teacher wants her to become.
Callie survives an initial abduction, but is left with a darkness which is recognised by Adam who holds his own.
This book will make you second guess who the teacher is, most of the way through the story.
And then just when you think you have all the answers Emma very kindly throws a spanner in the works!
