Tales of Mordenne #1

Tails of Mordenne

Rate this book
Craving more love match mayhem from your favorite human and Parakind matchmaker extraordinaire, with a twist? Miss La Faeii takes on the match of a lifetime, a task put to her by a curious couple with questionable morals.
Cinnia has grown tired and taciturn, disillusioned with herself, her boring job, backstabbing coworkers and all, her poor excuse for a love life, basically all her inconsequential life has to offer in general. Having already signed up for Made to Match, waiting as patiently as her frayed nerves possibly could, days to weeks, and still not a single potential match, she even begins to question that. Is it her? Is she really that unlovable? Unwanted? Is there no one willing to test a match with a sadly uncoordinated, jumbled ball of nerves and snark wrapped up in a sweet smiling, curvy package? Cinnia soon finds more than she ever could have imagined, smack dab in the middle of a world full of creatures and beings the likes of which shouldn't exist.
Dark secrets, loyalties tested, curses, inevitable betrayals, a bit of hijinks, magick, a sprinkle of fated destiny, and a few goofs chucked into the pot for good measure, Tails is anything but ordinary.
Please note: This books is a Paranormal Dark Fantasy, a bit of Horror thrown into the mix. Violence, dark themes, vulgar language, some funnies, plenty of snark, adult content, etc.
*This is a long book, a big ol' freakin' book. You have been warned.
Enjoy!

Let’s start with by saying this is a long book, but completely stock full of humor, magic, and mayhem, and of course, monster lovin’. The main characters are Cinnia and Dax, however, there are several other characters who steal the spotlight that I loved or found endearing. It really leaves you guessing what is going to happen and who is going to get with who.

As mentioned, we have Cinnia and Dax. These two are it for each other, but they are so different (Cinnia is human and Dax is not) and need to overcome a big hurdle to be with one another, but things keep getting in the way due to some meddlesome characters. No worries though, they find their happily ever after! They just gotta work for it.

I felt so bad for River. I loved him, and felt for him and wish he’d done some more to Sula. Couldn’t stand that evil woman. He deserves SO much better.

Then we have Morgan (the matchmaker) and Theseus (the ogre). I LOVED Theseus. Ugh. These two needed to be together! Matchmaker she may be, but she is so dang stubborn! She needs her frog prince. Bad.

And then we have Cinnia’s friend Permelia along with Brushe and Seidon. I won’t say much as I don’t want to give anything away, but this was so unresolved! Total cliffhanger. For a moment, a quick moment, I thought it was going to be Brine Sr., but nope. Now I’m left hanging! On Morgan and Theseus, too! Need more of their stories. Chop chop!

There are some wonderful descriptions (some not so lovely, haha), great world building, and hilarious characters (The B brothers are so funny!). Also, if you’re looking for heroines who are on the curvy side, Cinnia, Permelia, and Morgan are your girls. The beginning was a little slow, and there were parts that confused me, and maybe a little too much inner dialogue in some places, but I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to find out what happens for a few of these characters next!

Up in the air

I don't know how to feel about this book. I love this author but this book was a little confusing at times. There was times when there was to much inter dialogue going on. I feel like maybe it needed broken up into two books almost. I was happy with the great descriptions of the mermaids and of River. I was more in love with the three way relationship and more curious about them at the end then the couple the book was about. I think with a little fine tuning this could go from an ok book to a great one. Maybe the next one will be about the three way couple and be a little more exciting

I really. Really. Wanna' love this author. She's so devil-may-care about writing, and I love that about her. Her witticisms and charisma are very, very potent. However, she needs to bank a little more on editing. There's a total balance to writing, and she's so friggin' close to writing the most perfect book series in existence. BUT--her fingers are getting in her own way.

So. A lot of what she writes is great; plot, world building, sarcasm, and depth of characterization are all exceptional.

Where she falls flat; integrated action, character communication, dialogue, and brain vomit.

I want to sink into the world she's painstakingly achieved and reasoned. However, she wants to show-and-tell every thought the character's ever had--and that just mind-bogglingly distracting.

In fact, I did a little test:
I removed all the mind-vomit (characters frequently philosophizing internally during intense scenes) from two character's interaction, and the dialogue that was left over did NOT make sense. Yes. Characters in paranormal and monster universes do not have the same rules--yada yada scents, yada yada non-verbal cues--BUT generally, your out-loud and linked conversation should make sense. The transcript I pulled, did not. I did this three other times throughout the book, to the same reaction. She relies SO HEAVILY on chunks of brain-thinks to tell the story, that it gets lost between the poor characters.

It needs muddled down. Truly. A part of this could be achieved through narrowing down the run-ons. This whole book is riddled with sentences that need work. Yes, they are written in a way that is misused daily in common vernacular, but in a book--I expect some streamlining for easier understanding.

" Taking another bite of the food he’d brought with him to this impromptu outing, forking another bite of what he called the best pasta shit his little wife makes he’s ever eaten, he chewed and swallowed his bite."
...doubtless you can rewrite this any number of ways to correct the errors. The amount of these sentence structure issues in BOTH series is really quite frustrating. SPLIT IT UP, BATTEN IT DOWN. DO SOMETHING.

She could be a truly talented writer. IF she learns to edit. She has all the other little magical bits of story-writing, but this is one she needs to work on so the reader doesn't get bogged down. It's chaos in these pages folks, just be prepared.

I try to read the books from Jeanette Lynn because I really like the plot, the characters, the world, etc.
But there is an issue that happens with every book :
-the heroine keeps on thinking!!!!!!

I've read some books from this authir and if I recall they all have this issue. A constant, very, very long monologue from the heroine.
I thought that was just Jeanettes type of writting and I hoped it would get better.
But no.
This is a choice.

In Tails Of Mordenne, the first part is not in the heroines mind but in the match maker. And the monologue was okay. It wasnt long.
But since I started reading from the heroine perspective.... christ. Its just so annoying.

I dont mind that the heroine is shy, doesnt have a life, etc. These are personality traits. Hell I dont mind a good monologue here and there. But by the gods, don't Just put monologue after monologue. Stop it. Its not like what the heroine thinks or says is bad. Its just sooo long. Cut it. Choose what to keep and what to take out. Dont keep everything. This is like a hoarder with words.

But to be honest the monologues are not the worst thing. Those you can simply jump a few pages even if its annoying.
The worst is when you don't understand whats happening. When you have re-read the last 5 pages again and again and still you simply dont understand whats going on. Its not the case in this book, but it does happen in some of the other books from this author.

So many books from Jeanette I had to put down because I just couldnt take it. Every two pages I need to stop I am so frustrated. Be it from the awkward monologue or my incapacity to understand what the heroine is even saying!

Anyways, I don't want to hurt anyones feelings by saying all this. I honestly want this to be taken as a constructive criticism even if I have no idea how to do those.

I want to read these books, I like the plots and everything but just have someone new beta read them and be sincere. There are too many adjetives and reruns for every single thought.
Anyways, I tried to be nice in the previous books because I do end up liking them but it does get incredibly frustrating.
And honestly, these things I mention here are if I was to take a guess, the reason why more people dont read jeanette books.
Its either awkward for too long with the monologues or simply incomprehensible about whats happening. And ehy the heroine is doing stuff.

An unnecessarily long book

I'm glad that I read this, just to get an understanding of who was who at The Fin. That said, the book could have easily been cut by a third. Too much time was spent on inner dialog, presumably to underscore the female main character's insecurities and such. This could have easily been done in a more condensed format.

Love monsters

This was a fun adventure. With plenty of snarky inner monologue. Many awkward moments we are all familiar with experiencing. A wonderful story. I would love to hear who's story is next cause there are many little love interests brewing.

Chaos reigns

I was confused at first and you really have to pay attention as there are several things going on. However, it is worth the initial WTH. So much fun with mers, sea hags and other magical folk.

Slow slow burn but worth it!

As molasses and some grammatical errors, threw me off at times but muddled through it all!
Worth the time to read it all to the end!

Dark paranormal fantasy with lots of fun adult quirkiness! Slow burn world building with lots of great characters. I fell in love with it all by the end of the book! Cinnia and Dax do get their HEA in the end so I was happy.
