Because of… Lucky

Kevin McMurray never imagined he’d run into his old crush/heartbreak after twelve years. And it’s all because of a stray dog he rescued from the streets.

It took Kevin twelve years to forget Gale Harrington, the man he both loved and loathed. Now that was all about to be undone. Lucky, as he’d named the German Shepherd, needs a place to stay until his people can be found. Kevin is up for the task, but Lucky is a link to Kevin’s past he doesn’t want. He can’t say no to an animal in need, however. Gale reveals things and before Kevin knows it, he’s falling for the guy. But Gale is dangerous, and Kevin has no idea what the man wants from him.

All Gale ever wanted was to apologize to his former best friend for his crappy behavior in high school. He never thought he might get the opportunity.

After some personal discovery, he is happy where life has led him. He loves his job as a veterinarian at the local animal shelter, and owns one sweet crash pad. But when Kevin walks back into his life unexpectedly, he realizes something is missing. His best friend. But saying the words are harder than he thought. Thankfully, Lucky gives them a reason to reconnect. As the prospects of locating Lucky’s people grows dimmer, his bond with Kevin strengthens into more than just friends.

But can Kevin get over the hurt Gale caused?

A charming book the writing was good. Although there were some problems. There were too many repetitions of some words like names in paragraphs. There were grammar issues including spelling. There were odd phrasings like plumping cheeks. And incorrect word placements like into instead of onto. I did receive and advanced copy so hopeful a lot of these issues have been fixed. I did enjoy the story itself and the banter between the 2 MC’s was great. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. The characters were developed and thought out. Gale and Kevin are the MC’s of this book. There was lots of humor, snowstorm, a vet, a German Shepard, past memories, dog park, no kill shelter and so much more in this book.

Here is a quote from the book, “Gale gasped as the dog in front of them lifted his leg against Kevin. Kevin darted away, but it was too late. The woman apologized and scolded her animal. Gale covered his mouth in an attempt not to laugh. “It’s not funny,” Kevin said and shot him a glare. “You’re the kind of guy everyone wants to mark.” The words were out of his mouth before he could stop himself. Kevin just blinked at him slack-jawed.”. There is more but you will need to read the book. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

I absolutely loved this book.
Kevin and Gale used to be best childhood friends.
As they grew, Kevin fell in love with Gale, afraid to tell him for fear of losing him.
When they got to high school, Gale changed and shut Kevin out of his life, leaving him hurt and resentful.
Gale was struggling with his identity, also having secretly fallen in love with Kevin.
Instead of being truthful, he pushed him away in the hopes of saving himself.
Time has passed and suddenly a stray dog, Lucky upends Kevin's life and throws him back into Gale's path because he's a veterinarian where Kevin goes looking for help.
As they work together to find Lucky's family, they begin a tentative friendship when Gale admits the truth and apologizes to Kevin.
Suddenly their proximity starts a passionate affair that has them yearning for more but terrified to voice their concerns for fear of losing each other again
They both needed to work on being open and honest because lack of communication almost caused an end to the very best thing to happen to one another end, each other.
Lucky was an absolutely delightful addition to the book.

Best friends to nothing(???) to lovers

Kevin and Gale were best friends from childhood until Gale's first year in high school. Suddenly Gale ghosted Kevin and refused contact for 12 years. Now approaching 30, Kevin rescues a stray dog in a snowstorm. Taking him in to a vet for a checkup, he encounters Gale for the first time in more than a decade. Gale asks Kevin to shelter the stray until they can locate its owners. Now that the lost dog has brought them back together, they start a slow emotional spiral towards each other. Gale reveals that he cut Kevin out of his life because realized he was gay and felt more attraction than he was willing to admit. Better to feel nothing and be rather numb than risk his heart. Their problem is that they both do not communicate how they feel. I liked the characters and the plot, but the premise seemed stretched, two characters who cannot open to a former best friend at 30.

There are laugh out loud scenes which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I love Kevin and Gale and having been a “Kevin” I thank Ruby Sparks for writing Because of ...Lucky (B08618XH6N, 2020).

Sparks writes every bully victim’s dream come true. Sparks writes a story of apology and reparation. I think this is awesome. Sparks takes the time to write both characters back-stories and Sparks does not cut Gale any slack. Both characters are real and I could identify with both, especially Kevin.

Now let me talk about the romance and the heat. Hoowee...Sparks burns the pages with both. The chemistry between Kevin and Gale is hot and so is the sex. Damn Gale is good. (laugh).

I also love the relationship between Kevin and Lucky. There is not one thing I did not like about this book. Just like Lucky, during this time it brings a huge comfort that you want to read and then re-read.

I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.

Second chances and working out the wrongs of the past are brought about by a beautiful dog named Lucky. Gale has come to understand and accept himself, but long after he hurt his childhood best-friend. Kevin. Years later life has brought them together and given them a chance to get it right as adults.

Gale and Kevin forge a friendship and become lovers. Lovers who need to communicate and share their hopes and fears. Two very different men who really fit together and share the desire for a future. This story is about them learning to work together and find that future.

Lucky is a star of this story for me, his is a 'homeward bound' kinda of saga and it made me cry happy tears.

i fell in love with Gale and Kevin as they fight for their second chance at love.

I received an ARC at no cost from the author

I really liked the story and Lucky was my favorite part of the book! The problem I had with it was the lack of editing as it made it very difficult to read at times. Kevin and Gale were interesting because of their history together when they were kids. When they meet again as adults they have to learn how to move forward and Kevin has to learn how to forgive Gale. Throughout the book Lucky is there to bring them together as they try to find Lucky's family. I did love the ending even though parts of it were sad and emotional. I look forward to reading more books by Ruby Sparks.

Two best friends who grew up together when they were in high school Kevin loved Gale but never told him because he didn’t want to lose his friendship but Gale also loved Kevin but he ended up pushing him out of his life which broke Kevin’s heart. Years later Kevin rescues a dog he takes Lucky to a vet and ends up running into Gale who works there, they rekindle their friendship and as they both work together to find Lucky’s owner they end up falling in love. Fantastic second chance story I enjoyed it immensely and I recommend this book.

A beautiful friends to lovers second chance romance. Gale hurt his best friend Kevin years ago but now life has brought them back together, through Lucky the dog, and they have another chance to make it work. Can they work together and forge a future together?

Dogs are truly amazing

They live their short lives to please us and sadly, many miss the gifts they have. It’s great when an animal brings two unknowing souls together, sealing their fate with happiness.

Loved this storyline! Friends as teens, both realizing they were gay, but afraid to tell the other. Now, Kevin takes a dog he rescued to a local veterinary clinic and finds Gale and after all the years apart, Lucky brings them back together. Good ending

Needs an editor

This was a good story, characters were interesting, but there were so many typos, words missing from sentences, even the epilogue was labeled the prologue.
