Daniel Estmond has endured too much loss in his lifetime. His mother, his father, his fiancé … all of them gone from this world. Every day he wonders which person he loves will come next. He drinks away the pain and numbs the anger that only seems to fester with time.
What do you have to fight for when you’ve lost everything?
Reese Knight inherited Knights Bar when her father was killed. She grew up in Summer Hollow and has known the Estmond family her entire life. She always knew they were strange, but who wasn’t in a small town. Now, she finds herself slipping further into their lives, specifically the tortured existence of Daniel Estmond, and she is discovering that their family has secrets.
Daniel and Reese are brought together by unlikely circumstances as each confront decisions they never thought they would have to make.
Jennifer Malone Wright is best known for her best selling novella series, The Vampire Hunter’s Daughter. Other works include the follow up to The Vampire Hunter’s Daughter series called The Arcadia Falls Chronicles, The Graveyard Guardians series and her full length vampire novel called Savior (A Higher Collective Novel).
She resides in the beautiful mountains of northern Idaho with her husband and five children where she practices preparing for the zombie apocalypse. Just kidding!
But seriously, between the craziness of taking care of her children, Jennifer has little time left for herself. The time she does have left, usually leading far into the night, is spent working on her beloved fiction or chatting with her equally crazy friends.
Love the plot twists! Was waiting for Dan's book for getting an insight into what happened with his fiancée. Love how he found redemption & how the heroine also played hero for a little time.
When I first started reading the Graveyard Guardians series I found that I really liked most of the characters. However, my least favorite character was Dan, the alcoholic brother of Lucy. He acted like a jerk in most of the stories and it was clearly due to his alcoholism. He was in pain over the loss of his beloved fiancee. Keeper of Spirits is Dan's story and how he finds redemption.
Although the life of a Keeper is pretty much a secret, Dan has others that he is holding like the fact that he works as an exotic dancer at night. When the local bartender at his town, Reese, closes the bar for her birthday and she is partying with her girlfriends Dan shows up as the prize. This single action will lead to Dan finding a new lease on life and changing his ways.
Here's the thing, while I enjoyed the story there were several things that made this a so, so read for me: 1) The brevity of this read made an emotional connection between the two characters a little hard to believe. 2) The overall plot is really not moving forward so this book felt like a filler 3) There were so many editing errors that Ms. Wright really needs to rethink whoever is her editor.
In the end, this book was just a mediocre read for me. It lack action, emotional connection and errors got in the way of my reading enjoyment. Sorry, Ms. Wright!
I'm kind of already reconciled with the fact that this series will be just plain and not actually good, with almost zero plot or well-composed sentences. But it's not completely bad and when you just want something to take your mind off everything and completely relax, this is a series for you, which is why I'm reading this still. However, this installment was... something else.
Leaving the obvious lack of any plot or having the characters solve the main storyline which is somehow supposed?? to be in this series, I'm going to just complain about one thing in particular. It's a big thing though. And dumb thing to be honest with you. Okay, here goes:
The main male character is alcoholic. Fine, I have nothing against that! At least it's interesting and the characters aren't all goody two-shoes (is that how the phrase goes? haven't heard it in some time. Anyway...), right. I actually quite liked the idea. So no, the alcoholism wasn't my problem in this book. My problem was that the character somehow managed to get sober:
a) because of a girl (I mean... seriously. That might be a way to maintain your sobriety for a while, but definitely not for long ffs) b) while working in a freaking bar (yep. you're reading this correctly. Alcoholic. Working. In. A. Bar. I'd say you cannot make this shit up, but someone obviously did, so...)
now, point b) might have still been kinda fine I guess. Maybe the character has some conflict about this, but wants to prove to himself that he can do it, resist the alcohol and stuff, right?
Nah son. The main hero is not tempted by the alcohol AT ALL and working in a bar actually HELPS him maintain his SOBRIETY. I can honestly tell you that if the book started with this, I wouldn't even bother reading it.
Now, I don't mind if an author isn't exactly taking everything letter-to-letter how it's supposed to be and I can always appreciate a little creativity, or I'm willing to admit the plot was good enough that it doesn't matter it's not completely right. I'm seriously not one of those people who go around complaining that "these kinds of skirts weren't worn in 18th century yet!!" But this? I mean, just how misinformed must you be about alcoholism that you'd think being sober is that easy?
Like I've said, some next level stuff over here after which I seriously couldn't bring myself to give this more than two stars. Mind you, the plot helped, but... yeah.
San is an alcoholic. He has been since his fiancee Anna was killed by reapers. He protects the family and the graveyard, but always has his flask with him. He listens to noone. Reese owns the bar in town, one She inherited when her father was killed. They have known each other for years. When five readers come into town and appear in the bar, she knew something wasn't right. She called the keepers.
Reese had no idea what the sisters and brothers did, but she wanted to know. They refused to enlighten her. Even after they ran the readers off, they wouldn't tell. She was pissed. Things happen. Feelings change. They know the Empress isn't done with them. The readers attack Reese and it's a game changer.
Follow the keepers as they work to keep the souls safe, their friends safe and protect each other.
I was so excited for this book, that when I won a contest the author held I asked for an ARC of Keeper of Spirits instead! She graciously honored my request, and I was not disappointed with this book in anyway. As usual, there is a lot going on with the Estmonds. This book focuses on Daniel, and we also get to know Reese a lot better. Jennifer does a great job telling a story, pulling you into what is happening, and making you love/hate characters. I really like her writing style and I love this series! I ate this book up in one day!
I’ve enjoyed this series! I’m happy to see how each sibling works through their problems with help from family and friends. Dan was lost but we never really understood why, completely, until this book.
Yes, there are some editing issues but not enough to ruin the storyline. A reader should be able to over look and know what the author is saying. Let’s face it, not every mistake can be caught in this day and age of electronic checking! Waiting now for Greg, James and Steph story to be told
I love this series! This book manages to portray a very tough subject and not only do it justice, but do it justice while maintaining the integrity of the story line as a whole. The author has really outdone herself with this one.
If you haven't read the others, start from the beginning. I highly recommend this addictive series. Before you know it, you'll love the whole clan too!
This was the conclusion of the series. I'm not sure how I felt about the ending. It was exciting and I felt that it was not over..
I understood what the prophecy meant for the chosen one. I liked the characters and lives. The author worked out the storyline of most of Lucy's family. The keepers vs the dealers was a good series.
Besides the first novel in this series, I think I liked this one the best! It was yet another member of the Estmond family, but there was something more “real” about Daniel and Reese. I liked how they had to work out their issues (Daniel, especially) and then stand together to continue the fight against the Empress! More one to go! NOTE: Contains language and graphic sexual content.
I was so excited when my pre order downloaded. This is book 4 in the series. As with the rest of the series you get sucked in to the world of the keepers. Dan and Reese's story was fantastic.
Good read with more inner action between the sisters and brothers besides the community that has surrounded them as they were growing up. Looking forward to the next book in this storyline.
Loved the story within a story. The main theme of keepers versus reapers in ongoing. However I love the fact that each individual family member is sharing a personal journey.
Phenomenally written! This is another story you won't want to put down. With the family expanding and the danger mounting, these Keepers have their hands full! Can't wait for #5!!!
Love the Estmond Keepers, such an intricate and caring family. Seeing Dan come out of mourning and find love again was fantastic. This one was less intense than the other, but was maybe a nice break for the family. Can't wait to see what happens next.
It's hard to allow someone to get close when your whole family are Keepers. But it seems the time is right to introduce some new family members. Two are actually Reapers, but no longer want that life. One is a cop. A baby is on the way, another might be a seer.
Can’t get enough of the Estmonds!!!! Keepers guard the souls from the Reapers who survive on their essence, but their battles are becoming more frequent & more deadly by the second. Top that with having to lie to everyone about pretty much every aspect of your life. But you must protect the innocent from the unknown risk even as everything comes crashing down around you. Who are the good guys? Can they be trusted? Who would believe it all anyway? Find the answers ... here
I adore this series with it’s assortment of characters & action packed scenes! FYI...they are not for the faint of heart. Jack is a keeper for sure!!! I just adore him & his protective attitude. Aiden’s also stolen my heart though. He’s so sneaky wiggling in there & demanding we love him. But the Estmonds ... they hold a special place in my heart, & I am so happy Dan has found some peace. He’s shared some serious details I missed about him previously. Which is probably my favorite thing about this series...we get to see a different side of each of our beloved people as they reveal more of their secrets to us. The road to healing is rough. While I’m sure he has more to deal with on his journey, he has come a long way so far! I can’t wait to see where the next book takes us!!!
