It's much easier to adopt a child when you're married... it's a lot harder not to fall in love.
Scott had everything he wanted out of life. Rich and handsome, with his dream job, by most measures, he was successful. Until one day, he realized what was missing. He wanted to be a father.
Mark, a brilliant but isolated artist, has been living alone with his adopted daughter, Mary Anne, for years. When he finds out that Scott wants to adopt, a plan is hatched. The two men will get married and form a family - but Scott is straight, and a real relationship is out of the question.
Will Scott accept who he really is and what he wants before it’s too late? Can Mark allow a new father into his daughter's life? And what really makes a family - marriage, or love?
Unconventional Husband is the story of a steamy straight-to-gay marriage-of-convenience between two men who have given up on love. It features explicit scenes and a Happily Ever After ending!
So the book was ok. It was a bit odd how things came about and while it’s supposed to be an hea, it just felt like an HFN to me. It just....ended. Things still felt very up in the air to me. The big deal in the book was them trying to adopt. We don’t get to find out if that actually happens. Also the situation with Scott’s parents wasn’t resolved at all. If you sign up for the author’s newsletter you get a bonus scene and maybe these questions would be answered. That drives me crazy. Just give me the whole story in the book.
I loved Unconventional Husband by Riley Knight. It's a steamy straight-to-gay marriage-of-convenience story about Scott and Mark. Scott has everything he could ever want with the success of his sitcom that he both directs and acts in, but he finds that he has a hole that he can't fill. He's had plenty of relationships with women, but they haven't lasted, and he finally figures out what he wants more than anything, a child. Someone to love unconditionally and will love him back. When Mark a guest star on his sitcom comments on how lonely and unhappy he seems, Scott confesses to what he really wants, a child. Mark is also a single father and a successful comic writer and artist. And although everything points to Scott being straight, Mark isn't so sure about it when he catches Scott staring at him with a hungry look in his eye. So when they go on a coffee date to discuss Scott's problems, Mark suggests adoption and remarks that it's easier to adopt if you happen to be married. Which puts the idea in Scott's head to ask Mark to marry him, especially after meeting Mark's adopted daughter Mary Anne and seeing how great of a father he is. I loved how Scott has long denied desires for males that he has to work through and that Mark is there to support him in any way that he can. I loved Mary Anne also she was a cute little gem. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
This was a nice HEA with a lot of heat, but there was a lot that I think could have been fleshed out more -
And this was just odd, but the guys would enter a bedroom - fully clothed mind you - start kissing, everything being fully described as it's progressing and suddenly be naked and having sex... with absolutely no mention of clothes being removed. The only time clothes were described being taken off was when it was a bathing suit, but a full set of clothing? Nope neither guy had to remove those.
I do enjoy this author's writing, but want more - an actual book, not just a novella/short story.
I didn’t want this book to end....each page I came closer to ending this story the more I started to feel trepidation and I know it seems like such a large word to use for this book review but I just didn’t want Scott and Mark to be over with. Unconventional was definitely the best way to describe what they had in their marriage but damned if it wasn’t beautiful. Every obstacle was met with a kindness and understanding that truly we will ONLY find in a book but hey that’s why I read. I loved the match up of these two and how there was no beating around the bush to get to the meat of the story. I think my only problem was I would loved to have seen a little more with Scott’s family...I won’t say more to that...Don’t pass this by it’s an unexpected beautifully HOT sexy love story!!!
Overall I liked the story. It was a bit fast paced at times but that could be just my opinion about it. The story wasn't bogged down by unnecessary characters and drama and that's always a good thing. As for the couple they were a bit awkward at first but eventually the relationship smoothed out into a good one as roles and relationships were adjusted, for example Mark's relationship with Mary Anne, he had trouble for a little while adjusting to Scott being able to do things with her that he couldn't when he was busy with work or having some co-parent after being the only parent for quite some time. The ending felt a bit sudden, that being said however it was a reasonable place to finish the story as things could have potentially continued on for a good 100+ pages.
Not the best written book. The story did not follow a clear process. It went from having coffee to marriage proposal in a very unrealistic way. There was no build up. Also there was to little dialog between the characters. The ending to abruptly. No good 2 stars for effort.
This was a cute, quick and easy read. Both main characters were likable enough and their daughter as well. But because it was quick it did not seem that the characters were strongly developed.
