William McKay Aitken was a British-born Indian travel writer and mountain lover from Scotland. He was the author of a number of books about India, its mountains, rivers and its steam trains.
Engrossing. As an erstwhile denizen of the Himalayan foothills, I really relished this slim booklet. I wish there were photographs and, more importantly, the routes on maps for the treks the author has done. The bit about the height and naming of Mount Everest was quite a revelation! The fiction at the end was a lovely bit of magical realism along the lines of Murakami.
