He does not need opium. He has the gift of reverie. ~ Anais Nin
Part 3 of this Mary Bennet series begins with bad news for Mary: Lydia and Wickham are coming to stay at Longbourn. Wickham has been wounded in a heroic (?) effort to save soldiers injured in an explosion. He walks with a cane and bravely affects to wince without complaining.
Mary’s unacknowledged betrothed, Atlas Sutton, is recruited as an additional military doctor and begins treating soldiers. He notes that many men have elevated heart rates and pinpoint pupils. Hmmm, signs of opium use. Some of the men were afflicted with injuries, old and new, but how much laudanum has the military doctor been prescribing?
It is easy to get a thousand prescriptions but hard to get one single remedy. ~ Chinese Proverb
If the opium use has not been prescribed by the doctor, how do so many soldiers get it?
And Lydia – is Lydia an opium user also? Does she sleep so much from a natural indolence? Or is it something else?
Mary and Atlas must join forces again to solve this mystery.
All sins tend to be addictive, and the terminal point of addiction is damnation. ~ W. H. Auden
Autumn 1818 The story continues with this Pride & Prejudice sequel with the militia arriving back in Meryton, this means that the Wickhams are back. How much chaos and trouble can they cause. But Wickham has been injured, has he been a hero? Has Lydia improved on marriage? As expected the Wickhams insist on staying at Longbourn, upsetting everyone except Mrs Bennet. How will it end. Another enjoyable re-read, love reading about this sister and how she has becomes into her own. Another enjoyable re-read.
These are great stories starring Mary Bennet who is typically the invisible daughter. She and her fiance solve murders in Meryton, to the distress of some people! In this we find the militia and then the Windham family coming to town. Of course nothing is right with George Wickham who is smuggling and trying to rid himself of his stupid wife! I love this series because we find a more intelligent and much less preaching Mary who has taken over the running of Longbourne from her elderly parents.
There needs to be some editing. I liked this one better than the second one. It was more plausible and not so drawn out. Again, I'm glad this is mostly about Mary. Wickham finally get what he deserves. And, while I like Darcy and Elizabeth, I'm glad they weren't in this story. I do suggest reading this one. You don't need to read the previous to understand the plot.
I found this book to be even better than the first two. Mary and Dr. Burton finally announced their engagement. Wick and Lydia added quite a bit of stress to the family, but it looks like all of the sisters will be happily wedded in the final book.
This one brought the mystery close to home. Wickham really was dastardly, and I have no sympathy for him at all! I do love that Atlas and Mary face their troubles together, and the conflict is never really between them. Love a couple that works well together.
Yes, Miss Mary! You go girl. Go for action, mystery and love as well as deceit, drug abuse and death with Mary Bennet as the lead character. Poor Lydia has no clue.
