A BOOK THAT IS HARD TO LOVE, BUT ONCE YOU DO...
I will start this review with a warning: This is not your typical Chinese BL novel; if your guilty pleasure is reading fluffy stories in bed on rainy and cold afternoons, you will probably go through a wringer with this one. Lawless Gangster will definitely startle you in so many positive ways. This novel is much more than a traditional Chinese BL, and it goes so much further than the classical genre of romance. Genuine and realistic from the beginning to the end, the intrigue doesn't leave the reader's mind to rest for one bit. Deeply, and dangerously, anchored in the machinations of the underworld (Conspiracies, humans-trafficking, murders, blackmail, torture, retaliations..), the gory side of it does leave no place to doubt at any moment, if anything it oils the gears of this dreadfully captivating love story.
If Lawless Gangster is undeniably a romance, the universe of the story isn't neglected. Wonderfully and realistically depicted, the criminal world that concerns us here brings a ghastly aura to the text that's not without being pleasurable. Balanced and complementary, the side and main stories play a synchronized wicked game on the perception of the readers... and their blood pressure. If you love Mafia/Crime in fiction and Chinese gay-themed romantic novels, this one is quite the find. You will get everything you expect from it, and so many more things that you don't even dare to think about. Qi Xiu Yuan and Xiao Li's story will, for sure, be so much more than you bargain for.
Indeed, this book is not an easy read. The exuberant and comedic themes and crazy, yet lovable, characters that Chinese BL authors accustomed us to in the commonly acclaimed Bl/Yaoi genre are nowhere to be found in this book. Without being utterly impervious to human nature and its temperate contours, Lawless Gangster is well-versed in what crime fiction has of most typical and challenging. What else to add... if no-nonsense Crime-Romance stories are your thing, do yourself a favor and read this one!
And I love the cover. This cover is everything!
Just so you know, I read this book four times and I still love it. I don't know how one can rate this story 1 star... this is why I advise you not to give the read up quickly if you are new to the genre. You will love it if you're patient... and will be surprised as well!

dnf'ed at chapter 80.
I kind of wanted to finish it, the story was really good. But i just hated the personality of the teacher guy. He had like 0 self respect while pursuing the other MC. And while it worked it is just so much against my personality that i could not continue reading about it. But other than that i loved everything, it was original for bl novels and plot is pretty intriguing.

What can I say about this book?
It was brutal, gruesome but honest. As it was set in the world of gangsters, it did not romanticise the setting at all. It showed the harsh realities of being stuck in such a place. Betrayal, sexual abuse, backstabbing, murders, etc. it had all of this because that is the reality of the underworld.
Although, a few things were a little unbelievable, it is after all, a romance novel. Nevertheless, the characters had depth and were believable.
The male lead is a gangster and his actions are called out. Not as such much as I would have wanted but still. He is not shown as a glossed up mafia boss but rather as someone who unwillingly ended up in the underworld but is not someone to be pitied either. He is a bad person, and has done bad things.
But should he not be loved? That is the question we have to ask ourselves.
The main character did seem pitiful to me but I let it pass because we are all fools in love. Not as much as this fictional character but still.
So, I actually enjoyed this book and felt it was written quite well.
I would recommend it if all the above mentioned issues don’t bother you much. Happy reading!

This one had an okay plot, not watertight or anything but it worked for me, mostly. The instalove (kind of) was...just a tad too much, but the main characters are awesome and I love them a lot. The pacing though! Suuuuuper on point, I couldn't stop reading once I started and just kept reading all night until I finished it. A pretty enjoyable read overall! The epilogue was super sweet and made me go AWWWWWW.

Average guy MC as the top and Triad under-boss stoic bottom....what more can I ask? <3 Plot was okay, but the dynamic was great~ Thoroughly enjoyed this fic.
