Kizzy My grandmother was full of secrets. On her deathbed, she confessed that I wasn’t a gypsy. No, I was a highborn lady they kidnapped years ago. Could she have spoken the truth, or were her words utter nonsense? Duke of Harrisford Gypsies! How dare she set foot upon my land! I threatened to call the constable and have her whipped for trespassing But she had a way of calming me down… The way her hips swayed and she danced for me was spellbinding. Now I can think of nothing else. No one else. My bride-to-be will be here any day to greet me, And all I can do is daydream about the gypsy woman…
I enjoyed this story that has a great cast of characters, plenty of mystery, suspense, angst, confusion, self-doubt, and new beginnings. A toddler kidnapped and held for ransom, a self-centered grandmother who won’t pay, and a little life hangs in the balance. Intervention and self-preservation come from the elderly healer of the gypsies with an offer to raise her and teach her the craft of healing.
Kizzy has lived among the gypsies since she was a small child, living in the wagon with Vadoma, the healer, and told that she was her granddaughter. When most girls married young, Kizzy did not, but that was because Luca, the leader, had forbidden any man to take her as a wife. Kizzy learned the trade of cultivation herbs and making potions for healing. Eventually, she will have to learn other trades to help feed her and her grandmother, including fortune telling, dancing, and yes, bedding men for coins.
Lord Stephen Morris Trensby, Duke of Harrisford, is informed that a traveling group of gypsies is camping on his land. Coming upon them at night, he witnesses Kizzy dancing for coins, and she bewitches him. Ordering the travelers to leave in the morning, he rides out to find them gone, but finds one wagon and Kizzy. She makes him feel alive, and that angers him because, in two weeks, his betrothed bride will be arriving for their arranged wedding. Why can’t he quit thinking and dreaming of one dancing gypsy woman?
The plot will have Stephen and Kizzy having not one, but several encounters, first watching her dance and then finding her alone in the woods. He uses her and then is angry that she stirs his blood, and threatens her with punishment. Vadoma is dying and begs Kizzy to allow her to die on this land that she has dreamed of her future here, and how can she deny the women who are her grandmother.
The story has many twists and turns, secrets will be revealed, an evil ladder-climbing woman will nearly destroy several lives, and a mystery of over twenty years will be solved. Confusion, disbelief, anger, bitterness, angst, and revelation are all part of this fascinating tale.
Two souls that were destined for an arranged marriage will have their futures altered, but fate will step in, and their destiny will once again be placed to rights. The vision and wisdom of one kind soul will one day heal broken hearts, give meaning to a young girl, and correct the mistake that evil created.
The story has kidnap and capture, life and death, dominance and submission, along with many spankings, punishments, and sex scenes. It does have a happily ever after ending.
This story was a true delight! Its best parts are clear and away the characters and the setting/events. While some characters are stereotypes, they all seemed real and genuine, and I was totally caught up in the story. Also, while the story is predictable, it's still enjoyable, and I particularly loved the rich details of the era and society the author put in. It's clear a lot of research went into this book. I only have two negatives. The point of view breaks are not clearly separated, they're all over the place, but that's a minor issue. Second is repetition, both in words and plot points. Some aspects of the story are repeated far too much. However, overall, a truly wonderful read. I was given an ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Get ready for a heart stopping journey as a young girl, Elizabeth/Lizzy/Kizzy is kidnapped by gypsys and raised by a gypsy healer until she meets Stephan the Duke of Harrisford. The characters are well developed, solid, and interesting. I enjoyed each of the characters and felt like I was standing right there watching everything happen. I think Ms. Thornton is a talented story teller and I would enjoy reading more of her stories. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Despite the summary, which is written in first-person narrative, A Gypsy's Secret is written in third-person narrative. This was the first time I read this author's work and I really enjoyed it. I liked the story and the characters. You can't help but fall in love with them. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet spanking romance.
I really enjoyed this book and so will you. Kizzy and Stephan are strong characters, enemies at first, and last fall in love. There's more to this story than romance and spankings, well written. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
A well written story with lots of twists and turns. Kizzy and Stephan are two people who belong together but both of them refuse to believe it. The story has many things going on that keep you interested and wanting to find out what happens.
Like Der Zigeunerbaron, the Strauss operette, but with a lot more sexual attraction. A story that reads like a 19th century operette with gypsies and lost ladies. The language feels a bit influenced by a foreign language somehow.
This is the story of a young girl who fate frowned upon or looked away and left her in the hand of gypsies who would have killed her, were it not for the healer who desperately wanted a child of her own. As she grew up fate continued to frown and the only kindness she new was the gypsy healer she knew as grandmother. The story really begins when Kizzy's gypsy family parks their caravan on the Duke's land. The Duke, Stephan, is not very likable in the beginning, for quite a while actually. Kizzy is a sweet young woman who is trying to do right by her grandmother and also trying to figure out how to have a better life. What happens after the Duke finds them involves twists and turns, tortured chemistry, discipline, angst, mystery and intrigue. I truly enjoyed this book. 4.5 stars.
