A CONTEMPORARY TWIST ON A TIMELESS CLASSIC

Elizabeth Benedict lives with her parents and sisters on Smoke River First Nation. Intelligent, creative and passionate about language learning, Elizabeth dreams of leaving her community to pursue a career in the arts. When she’s accepted into the fine arts program of a renowned university, the pieces of her future appear to fall neatly into place.

But Elizabeth’s plans are thrown up in the air when Charles Bingley and the handsome and infuriating Mr. Darcy arrive in Smoke River. Before long, the lives of Elizabeth and her sisters are turned upside down as they’re forced to navigate the tricky waters of courtship, romance, heartache and scandal before coming to the far shores of understanding, compassion and epic love.

Pride & Rezjudice is a lighthearted retelling of a classic love story from an Indigenous perspective.

P&P is my all-time favourite book, so I have read a number of retellings/modern versions... and this Indigenous-themed modern version is by far the best one. The author was able to cleverly update the story (eg. Wickham was a Lacrosse player instead of a member of the militia, etc.), while also maintaining the sophisticated tone. The book was also quick and readable, making it an excellent book for teenagers. Too often YA books go too far towards being readable to teenagers that the language is very basic, and that was not the case here. I will definitely be recommending this book to others and will be checking out more of Sara General's books.

This was SUCH a fun Pride & Prejudice retelling! The author follows the same general plot and throws in some of the more iconic lines, however, it’s so infused with Indigenous culture throughout. There are also some clever little changes made to update the story for a more contemporary feel such as changing marriage proposals to job offers. We feel all the spirit of Austen’s original characters mixed with these new versions of them. I especially like the changes made to Lydia’s story. I think they give us a nice look into her personality. Overall, I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a fun retelling of a classic story.

What an interesting take on the original. I love how Sara General re-wrote the classic, Pride and Prejudice, through an Indigenous lens. My students read this for their book club assignment and their passion / love for this book had me curious! Naturally, I had to read it. I love the modernization of the book and you learn a lot about culture, language, and community. I’m a big fan!!
