This wonderful book is about George Forss, a New York Street Peddler from the South Bronx who cares for his invalid mother by selling photographs of New York on the sidewalks. Some of Forss best lends and cameras were found in pawnshops. This is the first book of his photographs which have been printed by Imprimeries Reunites Of Lausanne, Switzerland.

About the author

David Douglas Duncan (January 23, 1916 – June 7, 2018) was an American photojournalist.

He is best known for his dramatic combat photographs of the Second World War, the Korean & Vietnam wars, as well as for his extensive domestic photography of Pablo Picasso.

Duncan turned 100 in January 2016 and died in June 2018 in Grasse, France, aged 102.
In 2021, Duncan was posthumously inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum.

I liked a few photos in this collection. Many of the pictures feature the World Trade Center Towers that so dominated the city’s skyline. One commentator described these pictures as those “twin pylons of industrial power still shimmered in an aurora of sun light – modern cathedral spires painted with silver against the threatening sky.” Now of course, these pictures are powerfully evocative, and it’s a fair question whether the pictures themselves, pre 9-11, would have much of the same effect.

I wish I enjoyed more of these photos. I guess it’s fair to say that I liked the idea of Forss more than the photos in this book. He had a rocky upbringing and life and his photos, apparently, were his creative outlet. One of the commentators on his life and work made this observation: "George could not play the game, he could not maneuver through the art scene, he could not market his own work or even understand all the fuss about it, he would rather talk to reporters about aliens than about his photographic genius."

Das Buch bietet faszinierende Bilder. Natürlich ist es nicht mehr ganz zeitgemäß, aber immer noch beeindruckend und sorgt definitiv für Fernweh.
Alle Bilder sind in schwarz weiß gehalten. Meine liebsten Seiten sind 84 und 122/123.

Das Buch ist perfekt für den Beistelltisch zum Durchblättern geeignet.
