The Wonder Year: The Championships of the New York Jets, Mets, and Knicks Were Only Part of the Story in 1969

Rate this book
Imagine you’re a ten-year-old suburban New York kid, growing up on a dead-end street with dozens of sports-crazed friends. Your daily routine burns thousands of calories, playing in the street every minute your parents allow, imitating your favorite players from your local sports teams.

But while the games are fun to watch, your teams are not so good, at least not good enough to raise a trophy at the end of the season. Then it all changes, when not one but three underdog teams chase—and catch—glory.

Fantasy movie script? No, this was very real.

Framed by the first lunar landing, the legendary Woodstock festival, the tragedies of the Vietnam War, and the tribulations of Catholic school, this funny and nostalgic chronicle written through the eyes of a ten-year-old enthusiastically recounts the high emotions of this special year in the history of the country. It revealed the closeness and camaraderie that shined through in all aspects of family and community life.

The Wonder Year transports the reader to a place that for some is long forgotten, but it can now be fondly remembered—and to a time that in some ways was very simple, but simultaneously extraordinary. It captures the spirit of the the family values, neighborhood friendships, the common and comfortable rituals, the shared experiences.

In short, 1969 was nothing short of The Wonder Year.

I am the author of this book, so naturally I think it is ***** FIVE STARS***** ! Seriously, I believe anyone from the NY area (especially Long Island), sports fan, history lover, regular, down to earth people with a love for nostalgia will enjoy this book. It is a fast, easy read for sure. The feedback has been fantastic, and I am so pleased it has made people both laugh and cry (although it it mostly a happy book!). Would love to hear your feedback! Thanks

I wish I could meet the author and let him know just how much I enjoyed this book! It took me right back to the 60’s, growing up in Nassau County on Long Island. I know the neighborhood he grew up in although I never went there until I was old enough to drive! I laughed, I cried, I felt all of his feelings (except I went to public school) I wanted to play baseball so badly but we parents wouldn’t let me because I was not very athletic. Thank goodness my mom and grandma were Brooklyn dodger fans who turned to the Mets when their team moved to LA earlier on. We watched every televised game, even got to a few at Shea stadium. Now I’m a member of the 7 Line Army, living in PA and seeing my boys whenever I can LFGM WORLD SERIES 2022

A one and a million moment

Who would believe that 3 teams from the same state that would win championship in the same year. Long odds of that happening again. Great book
