The creme de la creme of physiology textbooks. It was written, I am proud to say, by Dr Arthur Guyton and his colleague Dr John Hall, both associated with my hospital, the University of Mississippi Medical Center. In eighth grade, my science class took a field trip to the medical center, and one of the guides asked us if we knew that one of the most famous scientists in the world worked in that very building. Of course, none of us had a clue. After I got home, I started working to find out all I could about Dr Guyton, and I was astonished to find that such an amazing person was right there in our midst, and I had never heard of him. Dr Guyton had a fascinating life, overcoming great adversity to reach the pinnacle of his profession, and making astonishing contributions to basic science, medicine, and education. I refer to his book constantly while working with my patients, and I never stop learning from it.
