I came across this book titled 'The History of Hindus : The Saga of Defeats'. The author is Dr. Surendra Kumar Sharma, a M.A. (Hindi), Ph. D. (Punjab), M. A. (Sanskrit), Ph. D. (America). Though it seemed that the book was eloquently titled, the veiled hatred in the name lead me to read the book. Whatever the author's credentials, the book is a 'hoi polloi' of Indian history and a antagonistic view of Hindus.
The author mentions that the "Hindu religion needs a critical re-evaluation from none else but its own adherents. This will bring about reforms in Hindu society which can be done only by Hindus themselves", but the book is a riff-raff, cataloging defeats in wars, maligning Hindu leaders, Hindu society and traditions.
I am surprised that such a canard is passed off as research work and the person claims a Ph. D. The same author has written the book titled 'Kotiliya Ka Anarthashastra', a book criticising Kautilya's 'Arthashashtra'! If anyone in this group knows this author or heard of him, please shed some light on his antecedents and intentions behind his 'research'.
But contorting the whole history and to present it in a way that depicts a whole civilization as defeatist and cowardly is purely incongruous. Though there might be something to learn from 'The History of Hindus : The Saga of Defeats', I find the author's view and intention as grievously myopic.
Every civilization has a history of defeats at war, several have been colonized for long periods of time, some are still at war with others, but how appropriate would it be to pick only the defeats and present it as the 'truth' of history? The very idea of studying history is to 'learn' from it. Self-criticism and introspection helps us to improve ourselves. However, instead of reading from the entire gamut of the past, it is inappropriate to pick and choose and chronicle only one facet of history.
For example, Dr. Surendra Kumar Sharma suggests that if the Indian civilization has to progress, Hinduism may have to be allowed to die. Do you agree with such views? He then suggests that Kautilya's 'Arthashastra' is the reason why Hindu Kings lost their battles. At one point he concludes that soldiers performing 'Sandhya Vandana', a daily religious practice, lead to the defeats at war! Do you agree with such canards?
I find the intentions of Dr. Surendra Kumar Sharma is to distort and malign the Hindus rather than provide a erudite, non-partisan and contemplative view of Indian history. If such a partisan view gets popular, it will only be used by the local and global forces that are out to undermine India's integrity, especially the evangelists.
