Toponymics: A Study of Singapore Street Names

Rate this book
In this second edition Savage and Yeoh (both in geography at National U. of Singapore) expand their analysis of Singapore street names to find clues about the ethnic, gender, and social shifts in a colonial, then a post-colonial city. They list streets alphabetically, including those which technically no longer exist due to development, changes in names, or absorption into other streets. In the process they find that whoever is in power christens the streets, and power changes from time to what was once a powerful man, business, or family has often fallen to colonial interests or large corporations. They include a picture section, cross-references, and bibliography. Given the alphabetical listings, there is no index. Distributed in the US by ISBS.
